Biden drops out; comparing 2024 & 1968 elections | Full interview

Published 2024-07-21
Long-time political expert Mike O'Neil talks to FOX 10's Brian Webb about his reaction to President Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and how it might impact races here in Arizona.

"Certainly not overwhelmingly surprised. We've all been sitting on sort of pins and needles about this and sort of expecting this. But also, I was cognizant the whole time. This is one man's choice. And Joe Biden exercised a choice that I think in retrospect may be described as inevitable. But the fact is he held all the cards here, and I think he was finally convinced that his candidacy was not tenable. He could get the nomination. Of course, that's locked up. But his chances of winning the election got smaller and smaller. And I think he made a prudent decision and one that will probably reflect well on his legacy, which was, I think, in danger of being tarnished by a sort of quixotic attempt to stay in power that wouldn't have played well, I think with history. "

Nobody's going against his endorsement, it's the best current option.

Your guest is incorrect on one topic, about RFK in 1968. Contrary to popular belief and what is reported in the media, if RFK wasn't assassinated, he was destined to lose the democratic nomination in Chicago to Hubert Humphrey, who was way ahead in the delegate count.
  • When I first heard that Biden was quitting the race, my reaction was 1968 déjà vu. The Democratic Party had a ready, willing, and (most importantly) able replacement on hand in 1968, in the person of Hubert Humphrey. Tragically, I very much doubt that Harris measures up to Hubert as a presidential candidate, and Hubert lost to Nixon. What amazes me is that a sequence of events like this may be the only possible path to a second Trump presidency: election by default. Further, this situation was clearly anticipated more than a year ago, and the Democratic Party leadership just ignored doing anything to prevent it after Biden expressed his intention to seek re-election. IMO, on her stand-alone credentials, I do not think Harris has a chance in hell of winning if (as is assumed) she replaces Biden as the 2024 presidential candidate. Why? The US has always been and still is one of the most racist countries on earth. Mix race with gender, then add the fact that the Biden Administration has buried her out of sight for the last four years, so she would have no personality competition with Biden. Give her nothing of popular note to do. She remains almost faceless now, with no record of doing anything except going to foreign funerals. (She's actually done a lot, but they were careful to make sure she got no public precognition.) She is inexperienced, and she does not have the personality to stand up to Trump's public bullying. This situation is likely to go down as one more, if the most damaging, instance of Democrats snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. There are at least 20 Democratic Senators and Congressmen who have spent the last month publically undermining Biden's re-election. If Trump is elected in November, I'd support ejecting them all from the Party forthwith and without debate or ""process".
