I just read the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, which explains, KonMari- a Japanese art that takes decluttering and organizing to a whole new level. Here is a look into my personal experience with it. It was a lot of work, but well worth it! I'm in love with minimalistic living now = )

  • Another question you could ask yourself would be "would I buy it again" ? If you wouldn't purchase it if you saw it at the stop ore it might be time to go.

Also, Konmari does say that doing this 'quickly' is within six months...the fact that you did it all in one go is amazing! No wonder you were tired! ;)

I'm just started the clothing in the house. As a mom of 10, I'm dying! 😜😂 We are moving though and now is the perfect time. 💗

AAAAAHHHH!!!! I love this. I went through the KonMari method about a year ago and got rid of quite a bit. I've since moved and as I started putting things away, I had minimal things but still felt like something was off. Your second question you came up with, "Do I see this item in my ideal future closet," just hit me like a brick. After this I'm going to straight go back to my clothes and ask that question, I think it will make the difference completely.

You are amazing Shaina! I have a large house, 3 kids and 22 years of stuff. Over the years I've donated and thrown out tons but I was very motivated after reading both Kondo books. I've given myself 6 months to accomplish my goal. Books were very hard and I dread getting to the photos part but I keep on moving forward!

I went through the KonMari process after discovering the book last fall. It took a few months to continue every category but I absolutely loved the process. I've shared bits of it online and with friends, encouraging them to do the same. Then this summer, I helped my mom go through a few categories in her house and we must have gotten rid of about 30 bags of stuff (clothes, linens, cleaning supplies, toiletries, trash, books, etc). I was there for a week and we just barely broke the surface but now, my mom is sharing her continued progress (like going from clothes in 3 closets, 10 bins throughout the house, and 2 dressers down to 1 closet with just a few sentimental pieces in the guest room and finally being able to access her bedroom closet again! Since I'm moving next month, as I pack things up, I've been ruthless in getting rid of extras, getting rid of clothes I'm not reaching for or wear and realize it's not for me. I've been steadily decluttering all year but now that we're moving, I'm using it as an excuse to really go for it! I just love watching declutter videos and I thoroughly enjoyed yours, especially with you starting off by saying you thought everything was minimal at the start! Thanks for sharing your process with us!
  • My big hangup about discarding stuff is the question "what if I might need this someday?" I have actually thrown stuff away only to need it later, but I guess a majority of the stuff is not needed. I remember hearing one lady say if she wasn't sure she should discard something or not, she just put those things in a large container and kept it for at least a month. Then she went through it again and discarded most of those things. I think that's what I'm going to have to do too.
  • My goodness...Congratulations to you!!! Best of blessings with your new space, and I know you do and will love it. My niece is off to college and we just did Konmari on her stuff, and girl, I never realized how much of a packrat she was!! But, we did, and now she can go and have everything organized in her dorm, and NONE of the junk!!!

YES! this is exactly what I was looking for. I'm in the process & I got discouraged because my husband is not supportive and I have two young kids so it's been a slow process. It's hard to get it done when they want to play with piles and mix stuff up. I'm getting there though and you have given me my second push to just do it. I'm getting that book too. I been thinking about it for so long but I'm so ready to read it and then pass it along to someone who is genuinely interested in it💜or I'll keep it until I find the right person lol. This was a long thank you comment lol
  • @edavis7740
I have been cleaning FOREVER. I take plenty of breaks because I just can't do it all in one sitting or one day, but my God. Kudos for getting it done!
  • @tiffanyg3980
BP before Pinterest lol! Girl me too! I still have clippings hiding somewhere!
  • @ono49014
I feel as though I'm the last person to hear about the KonMari method. I love it.
  • @teaoliver8475
Awesome job! I'm jealous of your bedroom, it's beautiful! Nothing wrong with still having lots of clothes, if dressing well makes you happy, more power to you!
  • @danielle4033
It's funny how everything is relative. Most may consider the clothes leftover no so minimalistic but considering all the clothes you got rid of it may be. Looks good though!
  • @RAQUI1982
love it,i never heard about the konmari method, first time but in a true believer that you have to let go of the old, bad, expired, broken stuff.i do this ones or twice a year, papers, clothes, old shoes, bathroom .its refreshing and nice to let go.i love minimalistic and i been like that my whole life, even as a kid ,clean and organized,i have to do my jewelry cabinets soon ,love to be in shorts, tank top and music to declutter my apartment,my husband is now into it lol no old underwears, socks ..
  • @Saucyakld
Hahaha, old? I sat in the bedroom for two days sorting, dumped stuff I loved off to the op shop just in case I was tempted to put it back but man, my back is aching and I have hardly any clothes. Never thought I had that many as I don't wear many. And old? Girl, I am learning Kon Mari at 72- and love it xxx
  • @MyFreshRose
If you find your jeans keep falling over on the top rack of your closet, you could put a nice white bookend at the end of it. Just a tip :)
  • Yes I agree it is such hard work and at the moment I feel I am in a worse mess than when I started. The completed bits are definitely encouraging.
  • I have a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom house and 3 kids - ages 1, 4 and 24 (hubby - ha!). I love him to pieces but he's a hoarder in denial. I've been LITERALLY working on this house for TWO YEARS. I am NOT exaggerating! I started when I was pregnant with our youngest. Watching videos like yours makes me so excited to get back on track! I've managed to send a tonnnnnnnnnnnnn of things to Goodwill but we still have a long ways to go. I've only lived here for two years so I can't speak for before I moved up here. My husband says it's part of mountain living that you hold on to anything you may need. That's why we have 5 boxes of unused blinds, 2 boxes of spare shower heads in case one of ours breaks and I KID YOU NOT, we had TWELVE potholders for pulling things out of the oven. I managed to get him down to three. The majority of the ones he had were old and wore out anyway! He doesn't want to let ANYTHING go! We also have a huge tote full of old cords that go to god only knows what. It's packed to the brim. He won't let me get rid of it. It's his raising so I can't be too mad I guess, lol. I've always been a minimalist and he's the opposite so it's been interesting to say the least! :)
