The X-Men Universe Explained: Timeline Changes & Reviews

Published 2023-04-22
With today’s landscape of superhero movie after super-hero movie, I think it’s very easy to forget where all of this started. Sure you could say the MCU started with Iron Man, and the critical acclaim started with The Dark Knight, but if we go back even further (Batman 89) nope, not quite that far, sometime after that (X-Men) Ahh, there we go, then we find a little known franchise called X-Men.

IMO X-men days of future past is the best marvel movie by far. Everything was perfect. The cast, the acting, the action, the emotions, the tension, the writing, the direction, it couldn’t be any better.
  • I feel like Jennifer Lawrence saw that "X-Woman" line in the script and told the writers "Alright I say it one one condition: You kill me."

I am a big defender of the X-Men movies, love them or hate them you can’t deny how crucial they were in the whole shared universe craze and giving Kevin Fiege his start in the marvel world. Would you consider doing some MCU videos? Or even videos about the Blade, Fantastic 4 and Tobey/Andrew Spidey movies? That would be awesome
  • Never understood why people hated the original x men movies I loved them and you did a great job recapping and pointing the pros of the movie
  • No matter what you think of the films, I hope we can all agree that Fassbenders Magneto was something truly special (even in the slodgefest that was Apocalypse)

The death of Magneto's family almost made me cry they did him dirty
  • They’ll likely reveal that Moira Grey has been resetting the timeline secretly. Hence the confusion. The audience will realize they’ve only been watching parts of many timelines. Like she’s been taking notes attempting to guide the future away from the inevitable war that kills them all
  • I just want to say that both Dark Phoenix and New Mutants were filmed before Disney bought the studio from Fox. Dark Phoenix was never designed to be a finale to the X-Men universe, hence why it ends on a cliffhanger. There is also the upcoming Deadpool/Wolverine movie that Marvel Studios is about to start filming, which further shows that the movie was no finale and Marvel wants to make more X-Men universe films.
  • I freaking love the X-Men movies. I rewatch them all quite frequently.

The fact that you mentioned X-Men Evolution in the first 40 seconds convinced me to watch this movie in its entirety! That cartoon is one of my all time favorites!! I love the way you explained the X-Men timeline. Well done!!! My favorites are the original, X2 and DOFP! I really hope MCU does justice for some of these characters and story arcs.
  • I wanna add a comment about the ripple effect. The concept of the ripple effect is particularly interesting when considering the outcomes of these films. In "Logan," we see the timeline eventually correcting itself as mutants once again face extermination. However, this time, the process of their decline is different, and the story also presents a contrasting outcome: a glimmer of hope for the mutants' survival, something the future team in "Days of Future Past" was striving to achieve. In essence, "Days of Future Past" began with the near-extinction of mutants, and through resetting the timeline, it created a new reality where mutants were no longer endangered. As a result, the new timeline had to reach a point where mutants faced extinction again, as this event had not yet occurred in the altered 2023 timeline. However, the existence of X-23, her companions, and the mutant refugees in Canada represents the ray of hope that the "Days of Future Past" future reset aimed to establish. This time, without the need for time manipulation, it suggests that mutants are here to stay for good, finally achieving a lasting chance at survival.

quick silver’s iconic scene is up there with night crawler’s intro scene. absolutely badass.
  • Slight correction on what happens to mutants in Logan: They weren't hunted down, Charles had his first seizure/episode at the mansion, but since no one knew what was going on or how to stop it, it ended up killing a majority of the X-Men and everyone else in the mansion. That, and, in the movie, there are various hints toward the fact that for some reason, mutants just aren't being born at the rate that they used to and less people are having their X-gene be activated. The reason Laura and the other children were being chased wasn't just because that they were mutants, but because they were being experimented on and escaped the labs.
  • I wish they had stayed to Nightcrawler and Mystique's comic personalities. By the end they destroyed Mystique's character and Nightcrawler faded to the background. It would've been great if they made a Brotherhood movie set during the JFK assassination. Mystique as a the main character, she learns how to be an assassin by Azazel as in the comics, she is the only one to survive the events, as Eric gets arrested and sent to the Pentagon. A prequel to Days Of Future Past.
  • @swagwolfgang
I honestly would love to see McAvoy and Fassbender make a return but i know they’d just be destroyed as characters
  • @richborn6700
Ill always appreciate the irony that through so many muddled productions and splintering timelines this franchise is actually pretty close to its comic origins
  • @jmili9
post credit last stand shows xavier swapping consciousness with a patient in hospital and saying hello Moria. She is a nurse for some reason there. thats why he's alive in Days of Future past.
  • Days of Future Past was the absolute high point of the X-Men movies. If Kevin Fiege had been in charge back, then we probably would’ve gotten of much better X-Men universe, but hopefully will be getting that soon. I still don’t know when their plans to introduce the x-men are gonna be but it has to be getting close.
  • @JustG1983
I agree with you on Days of Future Past 💯 10/10. Because of the ramifications of time travel, that became Logan’s new present- with him fully remembering his past. Which is why Mystique popping up kinda makes sense— she can help him out since she’s actively changing the past/present/future
