Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

I’m a little north east of you in Angelina County zone 9a now used to be 8b. Weather has been pretty strange the last couple years. We were down in Houston for a while and the weather there has been quite variable lately. My in-laws live there so we still visit. I live in the piney woods and I did start my tomatoes a week or two ago and they’ve all finally germinated. I grow lots of indeterminate because they seem to do really well for me here. I’m excited to see my peppers germinating. Only two types have come up so far, shishito and California wonder. I am excited to see the rest pop up! It’s my first year using heat mats and my new greenhouse.☺️I’m loving it so far. Happy to see you gardening and growing those plants. I love this time of year, it’s a chance to start it all anew again even if the freezes left you with a decimated garden or weeds took over. ☺️Best of luck in this new gardening season neighbor! 👍🏻

  • Hey, welcome back! I like to do mostly tomatoes and peppers as well. Our hardinez zone has been a little crazy for the past four years as well. Have a wonderful day Scott.

Hello from Zone 8a Central Arkansas. I did not changed zones; however, I moved about 35ish miles more into Zone 8a. I have Yarrow and Rudbeckia under lights and will start tomatoes and peppers soon. I look forward to following your 2024 gardening season. Happy gardening. Peace.
