This is a special video that chronicles my earliest experiences with the Sega Genesis. It's very personal and some of these views would change over time, but in 1989, it was all brand new to me.

Episode Notes:

1. Captured on the Mega SG.

2. While I remember playing these games quite well back then, I do not recall the exact order or dates. The video was setup to just go through a bunch of those earliest games to tell a cohesive story.

3. I own every game in this video. Despite not caring for some of them, they are so engrained into my experience with the platform, I had to have em.

4. I would own the Turbografx 16 shortly after the Genesis the following year(1990). Supporting both systems on my meager budget proved impossible however, forcing me to focus almost entirely on the Genesis until the following year.

5. I did a video some years back called Before the SNES - A Sega Genesis Story. It focused on games early in the systems life as well. I wanted to kinda redo that one to focus more on the earliest games, as you really don't hear a lot about them anymore.

The thing I like about this channel is how the game reviews are honest. He isn’t always praising every Sega game—there’s a good mix of constructive criticism for everything

I bought my Genesis Model 1 with Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Golden Axe and Castle of Illusion. Those games blew my socks off. To this day they still hold a special place in my heart and it's still my favorite console. Seemed like magic. Awesome times. ❤️

Truxton will forever make me think of Classic Game Room. Every game Mark reviewed had a micro review of Truxton in it lol
  • I really love this generation of gaming. I had a snes but have recently bought the megadrive mini and turbo grafx mini. The turbo had no presence in Australia. Each console had different strengths and unique hardware, unlike today where all three consoles are similar in design. This meant we received games tailored to the hardware's respective strengths. This channel and nes works do important work in preserving the history of games..

I missed the very beginning of the Genesis launch. I was introduced to the system in 91 when a roommate showed me Phantasy Star 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog. I was hooked, and that NES I owned suddenly became old hat. Of all the games you featured, I feel Revenge of Shinobi has aged the best, followed by Super Hang-On and Truxton.

Thank you for doing your part to remind the world that yes, the Genesis did exist before Sonic.
  • The sega genesis is definitely my favorite sega console. It had some great exclusive's and I liked the controller alot.

When I got a Genesis for Christmas, I hadn't heard of it. Was disappointed until I actually turned it on.

Got my Genesis on Sunday November 12, 1989. I remember it like it was yesterday. I also got Thunder Force 2 as well. My best friend was there that day, and we immediately went to my room, unhooked my SMS, and plugged in the Genesis. Spent the rest of the day playing TF2. He came over again the following weekend, and we spent all Friday, Saturday, and most of Sunday switching between Altered Beast and TF2. That Christmas, I hit the jackpot with games. I got Space Harrier 2, Ghouls N Ghosts, and Revenge of Shinobi.

Great video as always, I have loved all my Sega consoles from the Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn and of course the powerhouse that was Dreamcast, it's such a shame that Sega don't make consoles anymore... as I have so many memorable moments that I shall never forget, more so than any other company SEGA got me into gaming... Keep up the good work Sega Lord X.
  • I love how at the end, in that last Ghouls and Ghosts clip, Arthur runs past the first Red Arremer then finds the second one standing there calmly knowing he won't be needed to finish the job because the first Arremer's got things under control.

I remember opening my Genesis on Christmas of 91, popped in Sonic that came with it, and never looked back. Good times.

You do great job of combining factual information as well as oral history and are doing a lot more to preserve the history of the hobby than most other youtubers (especially ones who put historian in their names and upload a few videos a year full of stuff everyone knows anyway). Sales, ip disputes, and hardware specs are all very minor parts of videogaming; the interesting thing about them is how they make us feel.

I remember playing these titles all the time at my friend's house, he got the Genesis before me. The first game I purchased was Shadow Dancer, and I still admire how great it looks on this system.

I think this is one of your best videos in both tone & substance, you articulately describe the feelings of the Genesis in 1989. I had my first job in HS and was able to purchase the games I wanted as well as the Genesis itself. My favorites were Revenge of Shinobi and Ghouls & Ghost, for some reason I never picked up Mystic Defender-not sure why... Most regrettable purchase Alex Kidd

Remeber buying Rambo 3 second hand from a video store for around £14 in about 1992,realy liked, played the hell out of it.

my parents sold my NES while I was at school, I was so upset, they went and got me a Sega. I was so pissed, until I turned on Sonic and I knew I had a good console that I would grow to love (thanks to classics like shinobi 3, shining force, Contra HC)

The Japanese Fist of the North was so much better than the US Last Battle. My favorite launch title of Genesis was Thunder Force 2 by a huge margin. I was simply blown away by the graphics and sound.
