4/23/2022 Supercells in Central Oklahoma

Published 2022-04-24
A great storm chase with Jonah Pehl, Emily Blumenauer, and Kendall Junker.

A line of supercells affected central Oklahoma Saturday evening, one of which went right through the OKC metro. Luckily, no strong tornadoes occurred. We saw the early stages of this supercell before it prompted tornado warnings and found ourselves pretty close to the mesocyclone, which produced an EF0-rated tornado just north of Tuttle. The tornado was completely wrapped in rain.

As the storm entered the busy metro, we dropped south to another developing supercell, but no clear rotation was spotted as it chased us back to Norman. We rode out the storm under a gas station on the northwest side of town and encountered pea to dime-sized hail and very strong wind gusts.

This was on the 1-year anniversary of my first tornadoes!    • Lockett, TX Tornado Chase (4/23/2021)
