The 11/15/09 early morning implosion of the Amtrak Steam Plant near 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, more colloquially known as "The Drexel Shaft." A symbolic victory for the students of Drexel University and their fight against bureaucracy.

Music: Hide And Seek by Imogen Heap

To the people who asked/care: the footage was shot on a Sony PMW-EX1 at 720p and 60 frames per second overcranked. I did a few in-camera filters, but I also took a lot of artistic liberty with the color correction. Thanks for the curiosity :)

The Drexel shaft may be dead, but the suffering it brings to us students still lives on

Even watching it from Ucross not more the 100yards away it still seemed so surreal. But this takes something interesting and otherwise mundane and makes a spectacular sight out of it. This is masterful excellence. I LOVE HD. keep up the good work.
  • New rule any time this footage plays in the Ucross lobby all students must stand at attention, and salute as the shaft starts to fall. Students may then return to what they were doing when the shaft has hit the ground.

Seriously excellent capture.. and the color correction is very cinematic. Nice! That's an angle I'm not used to seeing of the Amtrak building, too..
  • As for the significance of the shaft and it's destruction: The smokestack is called the Drexel Shaft and had basically become a symbol of the school's bureaucracy and it's common tendency to "shaft" students (the legend is that whenever one of us gets F*#&ed over by the bureaucracy the shaft grew 1") . So the destruction of the the chimney was symbolic to as as is represented our hopes of one day overcoming/bringing down the unbelievably difficult administration at the school

Man I love this video. It makes something as mundane as a concrete chimney falling to be completely awe inspiring, and stir emotions. It seems as if the the entire city has halted to see the stack fall to the earth. Very surreal, thanks for the video!

love the shockwave across the amtrak building and the windows shattering in the shaft building

Awesome video.... well done. The slow motion HD looks incredible!!!!

This video is so ridiculously perfect. I've watched it about 10 times.

Very beautiful... It evokes a certain unexplainable emotion everytime I watch.
  • The music was a perfect choice, LOVE IT! (for anyone that is against it, the music is to spoof a one tree hill season finally a while back and also a subsequent SNL skit. So put in that cultural context of what happened in those it fits the video brilliantly.)

Man looks so sweet in HD, I spotted a plane in the sky, I don't know anything about the building but I gotta say that was sweet, I especially thought it was cool when the shockwave hit and rattled the windows of the blue glass building

-Your powers are weak, old Shaft. --You can't win, Drexel. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine. Now look what you've done!
