Panasonic GH5s versus Sony A7 III. I have been itching to see how these 2 cameras do against each other and have been waiting to make this video for a long time. With a GH5s in the house, this was my opportunity! The Sony A7 III is my own camera, and the Panasonic GH5s is a camera that Panasonic sent to me to test in the Christmas Room so I could see how it does in my own environment!

There are rumors from the rumor site that Panasonic may make a firmware update this summer for the GH5s GH5 and maybe even the G9. That would be really good news to my ears. This video is not to point out again that Sony's focus system is better, but to flesh out the quality levels and how these cameras would appeal to folks on the hunt to buy them!

Nice video peter. Never watched your channel before but you got me hooked with jingles
  • @town3
A73 just looks better and the Panasonic is producing two different colors of spotish colors on your face, just don't look good to me. I'm not going to even get into the Panasonic AF. Great work Peter keep the videos & reviews coming.
  • @garygrimes9846
Your face looks professionally retouched with the a7 III, AMAZING!
  • @panmaew
Again, a fail for GH5S' autofocus. Can't get over that pulsating.
  • @frankyvee1
In this example I'm liking the A7III image quality. The GH5s is putting a slight magenta cast on your face.
  • @EnzoJerezberlin
Great Peter! You are the coolest !!! Thanks for your nice sense of humor!
  • @JesseMensah
Don't understand why there aren't a lot more compares like this one??? Thnx Pete!
  • @Jacob_Roberts
Thank you for panning back and forth between the two cameras. Your image in the GH5s looks bigger to me than the Sony A7 III when you are closer to the camera.
  • @seanshirishi
Wow, ...only 2 minutes in and already I'm going to comment to say that the focusing breathing on the GH5s is making me nauseous! :o Thanks for doing a comparison video, Mr. Gregg! <3
  • @clifftotten7609
Wow,...the resolving power of the A7-III is eye popping! Even the tiniest minute details jump right out.

@PeterGregg As Chris Barr points out, there are different colors showing on your face. Specifically, the GH5S shots show more yellow on your cheeks, chin and forehead with a splotch of pink in the nose/mouth area. In contrast, the Sony shows more consistent color across your face. Interestingly, the Sony saturates REDs much more, but despite that it didn't overly redden your face. The question now becomes, WHICH came is more ACCURATE? For example, when your eyes look at the red flowers next to your clock, does the video taken by the Sony match more closely to what your eyes see or the Panasonic? The same can be asked of your face when you look in the mirror. Is there yellow in your face as the GH5S shows, or is the coloration of your face, as seen by your eyes, closer to the SONY?

Thank you for the A/B shootout Peter.. That's a good way to compare any two fierce competitors in an 'applied' scenario. It re-affirmed (to me anyway) that the Panasonic has most of the attributes of a true cinema camera (as taught to us at Cinema school). i.e. 422 colour-space, 10 bit, 60P at 4k. As opposed to Sony's better AF (but still Not swivel !.. What? ). Also, it's not fair to pit the $630 Pana lens against the $1400 Zeiss lens (at twice the price!) S people should allow for that in their comments. The Zeiss will win the sharpness test if you shoot focus charts (It has higher DXo rating) but in reality the Gh5 can make up for that discrepancy by virtue of it's superior electronic transfer circuitry (Moving pictures have different impact on human perception) . I have a $4000 Sony too and am looking forward to the A7s3) to compare as technology evolves daily.. but unless people test the Gh5 themselves (hands on as I have) it's difficult to appreciate it. Autofocus has always been the domain of domestic/ family applications, yes it can be useful But I don't thing the Gh5s is aimed at that market. Thanks again for the work you did.
  • @3syllables
The Sony A7 III is sharper and has better color from what I'm seeing.
  • @matahari1576
Last week I saw a screening od a full fletched feature film at the Festival in Cannes entirely (except 2 small scenes with the a7S II) shot with the Gh5!!! Beautiful film. Beautiful pictures and framing. So, it is all relative and depends on a lot of variables. Most important: The knowledge and talent of the dop.
  • @mauibuilder1239
Nice comparison! The GH5s needs to UNLEARN those Christmas lights! 😵
  • @AllCarsUnited
The specs on the gh5 are great. Unfortunately they don't use a 35mm sensor. What's up with the skin tones and autofocus on the gh5?
  • @poetsguide
If you grade your footage the GH5s will give you much more wiggle room. I own both a a7iii and GH5 and find the GH5’s filed easier to color correct and grade.
  • @ekphotography
I am a Sony video user and Canon photos, I always like your GH5s footage but the constant pulsing with the lights in the background from the shifting focus is very annoying.
  • @joshfetil6059
Hi peter greg can you review the sony a6600 vs panasoni gh5s/gh5
  • @PchLatino
Hello friend, I have a great question. I hope you answer it. I have a lumix gh5s and I need a lens especially for blogging as I have not found a lens with the super extraordinary autofocus, recommend me one to make my videos
