In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Golden Retriever that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Sporting Dogs
Weight: 55 to 65 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 9 inches to 2 feet tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years

It's no surprise that the Golden Retriever is one of the top ten most popular dogs in the U.S. It's all good with the Golden: he's highly intelligent, sociable, beautiful, and loyal. He's also lively. The Golden is slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personality of a puppy until three to four years of age, which can be both delightful and annoying. Many keep their puppyish traits into old age.

Originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other fowl for hunters, the Golden needs daily exercise: a walk or jog, free time in the yard, a run at the beach, or lake (Goldens love water), or a game of fetch. And like other intelligent breeds who were bred to work, they need to have a job to do, such as retrieving the paper, waking up family members, or competing in dog sports. A tired Golden is a well-behaved Golden.

As well as giving your Golden Retriever physical and mental exercise, you should also be prepared to include him in your family activities. The Golden Retriever is a family dog, and he needs to be with his "pack." Don't consider getting a Golden unless you're willing to have him in the house with you, underfoot, every day.

There's one other potential drawback to the breed: He's definitely not a watchdog. He might bark when strangers come around but don't count on it. Most likely, he'll wag his tail and flash that characteristic Golden smile.

My Mom used to breed goldens when I was a kid. I remember when I was 10 years old, a litter of puppies were born and one pup stood out from the others. A hyperactive fur-ball with distinctive white markings on his chest and front paw. I begged and pleaded with my Mom to let me keep and raise him.. Eventually she buckled and said yes, but only I if took full responsibility for him. My boy and I grew up together, I learned how to be responsible through looking after him. I trained him, worked to pay for all his requirements like food, toys, vaccinations, medical bills. Some of the best times I've had in my life, I shared with him. One late September evening after 19 amazing years together, my boy laid on my lap for the very last time, passing away later into the night. I can confirm that every fact mentioned in this video is true, at least from my experience. Golden retrievers are an exceptional breed with great versatility. If you're lucky enough to be loved by a golden retriever, you're lucky enough.

  • We have had golden retrievers since we first married 35 years ago. They are indeed incredible pets. When I look back over my life thus far I remember each of them...their constant love and devotion, the joy they bring each day and their desire to HAVE FUN. You will treasure each moment, each passing year and mourn their departure...as they truly are and will be your best friend. So to Maxwell, Touchdown Jimmie, Lady Sophia and Beau....I have treasured each day! Love you guys! Hope to play ball with you all again some day :)

Golden retrievera are my favorite they are intelligent adorable loyal friendly and trustworthy 😁😁🤩😁😁😁😁🤩😁😁😁😁
  • I've had Golden's for 20-plus years. Lost our last golden in January at the age of 15. You could leave him in the kitchen with a t-bone steak on the table and he wouldn't touch it.Little kids could crawl on him and put their face in his dog bowl while he was eating and it wouldn't bother him. Now I have three great Pyrenees. So different. But love them every bit as much. I asked my wife who put the pork away. Our great Pyrenees put six away while we were in the room and not paying attention. My wife caught are great Pyrenees tiptoeing around the top of the kitchen table cleaning all the plates off and not knocking a single glass over. Goldens are the best, great Pyrenees are the best, Dobermans are the best, just love your dog and you will have the best.
