This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The internet is a powerful tool with many layers. Kyle Terry shares his exploration of one of the deepest layers: the darknet.

Kyle Terry was destined to become a computer historian. Having worked as a systems administrator, software engineer, and senior devops engineer, he's explored many aspects of computing and is qualified to speak on a broad range of topics. See his history of the internet presentation here: kyleterry.com/tedxsalem.html

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

"I don't want to feel like I've done something wrong doing research". "...or judged in general while I'm on the internet." Great quotes to keep in mind.

I was too distracted by his monotone style of speaking, pacing back and forth, and looking at his cue cards to know what he was saying.  Very poor presentation style
  • This guy is very smart!! I'm enjoying listening to him. I love having my privacy after everything I've been through in my life. Thank you. God bless you.

I am so happy to C young people fighting for privacy. I am old schools and I am a privacy advocate. I had some one say to me "you have to understand young people have little need for privacy because they give it all away on facebook,twitter,youtube,ETC.." .When I digested what he said he was spot on. I responded with "I see nothing bad or wrong with young people giving their privacy away on facebook, twitter, youtube ETC as long as it is by choice". What I want so bad for the young generation to know is that your choice is going away and once it is gone they will take your internet away..The battle for privacy online has nothing to do with fighting child porn or terrorist and everything to do with the social power and information that is at every ones fingertips who has internet access.Control of this power is what they want. The first steps in taking control is to take your privacy.

The camera man on tedX normally sits back and sips coffee whilst flicking tru a magazine as the talker stands and delivers the talk. Meanwhile the camera man trying to film Kyle Terry:

This makes me realize my lack of knowledge of how computers actually work and connect despite using them regularly and growing up as part o the age that is supposed to actually understand all the new, 21st century forms of technology.

Thanks Kyle! You gave some great info to help keep us safe and well-informed. This is true democracy in action, so it's great to hear your sensible understanding of the darkweb.
