Why Mario Lego Took So Long to Make

Lego and Nintendo are teaming up to make Mario Lego!

Soon we’ll be able to race Lego Mario past a Lego Piranha Plant, past a Lego Monty Mole, over Lego Goombahs and on top of Lego Koopas, all in a goal to reach the flagpole, defeat Lego Bowser, and rescue Lego Princess Peach.

Maybe this isn’t a big deal to you, but it is to us. We are a Lego loving family, and so when we heard that Lego and Nintendo were going to collaborate, we knew we all needed to get involved. This video features all three of us, and you’ll see all of our hands at some point.

Believe it or not, we had been working on a Nintendo Lego video before this announcement even came along. We wanted to make this video last month, but sourcing all the Lego we needed for it took too long, so we put it off. When the Lego Mario announcement came, we knew that now was the moment, so we powered through to get it to you ASAP!

Obviously, this is a very experimental video. If we’d done something more traditional, it would have been ready a lot sooner, but we wanted to take the time to try something new. Hope you like it!

Special thanks to the wonderful Before Mario blog for photos and details on Nintendo N&B blocks, and, yes, we know they appear as an Easter Egg in Super Mario Land 2 on the Game Boy.

We’re excited to learn more about the new Mario Lego sets in the near future. In the meantime, we’re off to Legoland tomorrow! Told you we’re a big Lego loving family!

Lots of love,

  • So this is what truly happen to Mario when he's stepping on a LEGO brick and say, "MAMA-MIA!!!"
  • There's a reference to Nintendo's LEGO brick knock-off, N&B Block, in a level of the Game Boy video game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

I just watched a lady playing with LEGOs while talking about lawsuits.
  • It took so long because they were too busy making a rescue helicopter for the man in LEGO city

And suddenly millions of wallets cried out in agony as this was reviled But in all seriousness i really love the style of your videos. I've been waiting for years for Lego Mario and I just can't begin to explain my joy for this.

2020: Nintendo and LEGO finally collaborate Me in 2050: Gather round my dear grandchildren. Let me tell you a story about an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
  • 'Everything is awesome' saw that coming at the end. And hey hey! We can also make a Mario and Sonic crossover in Lego now! In official lego! That is, if Mario has an actual mini figure.

Lego: Tell us your idea and we will turn it into a real Lego set! Idea: "gets 10,000 likes" Lego: no

2020: LEGO Mario 2980: LEGO Minesweeper
  • The sets definetely look cool but I'm kinda disapointed they went this route instead of making a regular set with minifigures.
  • That was a refreshingly different video - also that Breath of the Wild stable set is really perfect and I'd probably get into Lego again if they released it.

I am glad Lego keeps the IP options open and just takes then down if there is a conflict. And Lego's games partnership with Nintendo did create my all time favorite Lego game, Lego City Undercover. Since it was a Wii U exclusive at first there were plenty of Mario references in the game. A buildable bob-omb, a cannon that shoots bullet Bills, five buildable star men, a red brick that let you wear a Mario hat, and a buildable Dry Bones in the museum. Butt like I said that game is still my personal favorite.
