A comprehensive super cut guide to Elden Ring's pre-release unpatched disc version! This project took around a year and a half with the prior individual videos in mind, and 7 of the last months putting this giant video together, so I hope you can appreciate all the hard work that went into it, and enjoy!

If you know anything I missed, do let me know in the comments and I'll add it to pinned comment and Companion sheet if applicable!

Hats off to you for this massive undertaking. I thought about making a video like this after my smaller/ more-casual "here's a few unmentioned changes" videos, but nope'd at the level of effort required. I'll be chipping away at this over the following week. ❤
  • @BackseatStreams
The ultimate historical record of how late Elden Ring was 'finished', super interesting!
  • @danielhogue4327
FINALLY!!! I've been saying for over a year how crazy version 1.00 is different than the updated version
  • @SmoughTown
Thanks for this incredible coverage bud
  • @Napa2323....7
Shouts out to the 1 guy with a guide to 1.0! After my 10 elden ring playthrough I was looking for something new heard about 1.0 and your guide helped a ton. Thanks man.
  • So overall, less weapons, less music, generally more awkward design, less rewards, an insane amount of empty chests, imo worse item names, less animations, etc etc Really makes you appreciate those finer details
  • @thegamemanic1911
This is an incredible video. The subsequent updates after the game released finishing NPC questlines made it clear that Elden Ring was being finished to the wire. It’s great to be able to get a comprehensive look at what else they changed even after being “finished” so to say.
  • @Kara_Pabuc
It's more like 0.9 version because all those missing items hurt the exploration. It's not a finished product.
  • @jacobrichard118
I am here because i saw the video and thought “how is this 3 hours long??”
  • @super_pretendo
1:37:12 "Sword of Moonlight" is actually MORE of a callback. That's what it was originally called in King's Field.
  • @Cavaleiro__Vazio
1:56:26 this actually kinda blew my mind because to this day the brazilian portuguese translation still calls those spells "Dark Bolide" and "Pleiades", also in the brazilian portuguese version, if you infuse the omen's cleaver, the name will change to "Zanbato" which i believe was the original name of that weapon.
  • @PierceArner
One description I'd make note of are the Skeletal Militiamen Ashes. They're the only Spirit Ashes with detailed and VERY different flavor text to the release version. Another note for the Dragon Battle & Malenia's Theme is that these are common practices for placeholders to make it easy to find which ones have final stuff and update, and which ones have a temporary one that can be left in if needed. This is also why 1.00 has a lot more Arteria Leaf, Root Resin, & Budding Cave Moss placeholders, as those seem to have been the go-to item to be replaced with different items later, and is why the release version still has some of those locations with Arteria Leaves becoming a bit of a meme. 28:36 — Ghostflame doesn't have ANY Frostbite effect, which also indicates a likely reason why their weapons don't have that effect consistently applied as a status on hit even in the release version game (In release: Death's Poker deals Frostbite damage on every hit, whereas Helphen's Steeple only does while the weapon art is active, and the Death Ritual Spear can't apply it at all). As you'll see later at 2:37:13, it's still called the "Flame of Death" and 2:47:24 "Explosive Ghostflame" is instead "Flames of Death" — which is identical to the Black Flame stripped of the power of Destined Death. This is why at 3:18:51 Malekith's Black Blade's Ash is called "Destined Death Unbound" as that differentiated the Black & White flames where that power had been stripped from it from the Black & Red flames his and the Black Knife Assassin's have access to. (There is a cut line of Enia's that mentions the Erdtree originally being consumed in Black Flames, so these are details and changes that happened later on, and are likely a large part of lore that was altered and shifted into Shadow of the Erdtree with Messemer wielding the Black & Red flames and other elements that involve the burned dead who aren't returned to the Erdtree, which is the basis of why you can summon certain Spirit Ashes according to what Ranni tells you when giving you the Bell). 57:04 — Of note, the Dragonbarrow Isolated Merchant sells Radahn's Spears regardless of whether or not he's been defeated, which is a neat advantage in 1.00 if you're using a Greatbow. 59:44 — This is the first time that it's revealed that the Beastmen have golden lightning attacks rather than crimson lightning like in release. 1:00:00 — The Azula Beastmen summon icon shows 3 beastmen in this version despite still only summoning two. In Liurnia, the massive Miranda Flowers' magic attack visuals have totally different seeking crystals compared to release, and thus effect also doesn't appear in any spells in the game, so it is totally unique to 1.00. 1:09:25 — There are actually a LOT of "first pass" translations in 1.00 flavor text descriptions where there are minor adjustments in terminology here and there without any significant change. It makes it a bit more muddy to easily notice which ones are meaningfully different. (1:12:07 Magma Wyrm Makal/Makar is an example where the first pass translation will be to get it in place as マカル could be either one, so this will be there before the design and/or localization team approve final verbiage). 1:11:01 — It's worth preemptively noting that everything about Frenzy in this version is still in various stages of development changes. As you noted earlier, the game uses the Red Eyes for Frenzy in his, and Vyke has both aspects which are the Red Lightning AND Frenzied Flame. This in-transition design is why at 1:59:24 you'll also see the Frenzied Troll crying crimson lightning rather than Frenzied Flame. (This is also likely why the Beastmen still exclusively used Gold Lightning rather than the Crimson Lightning of the Ancient Dragons, but more on that later). 1:13:00 — This is also a bigger difference related to the description of the armor set. Loretta's is "Royal Guard Armor" described as "Silver armor of the Arbor Sentinels who serve the sacred tree of Miquella, the Scion Empyrean." (Helm "Features a huge circular wooden crest"). _"Hailing from Raya Lucaria, these enchanted knights once belonged to the Carian royal family, but were later gifted to Miquella, recipient of the Vision, by King Consort Radagon. The lapis blue trimmings reveal these origins. (Hence why at 2:58:48 while she doesn't drop her weapon the Ash "Loretta's Slash" is called "Miquella's Wrath" as they're just a type of Carian knight in Miquella's service at the Haligtree). 1:18:16 — I'm quite curious if this was initially the intended item, since she is holding an Amber Egg and the Amber Shard is more thematically in line with that, especially given the above point about all the subtle changes to Miquella & Caria's alliance, which there are more of later on like with 2:57:11 the Oracle Envoys being Glintstone blue colored like the other bubble magic of the Claymen (where even in release the descriptions state that they are searching for the Oracles). 1:20:24 — Another point that the "cold Ghostflame" doesn't exist in 1.00 as it does in release, and the expanded Fallen Hawk-related details are absent (given that they're largely a single cohesive BERSERK-themed element, it's not surprising they're collectively missing). However, it's worth noting that Fallen Hawks ARE in the Siofra Aqueduct despite not being anywhere else. 1:29:10 — I recall that large Silver Tear ball on the ceiling that you HAVE to fight here also has a lot more regular Silver Tears on the ceiling with it in 1.00 compared to release. It's also 1:30:06 — The description of the Dragonscale Blade also has an interesting difference in 1.00, “A weapon forged from the remembrances of dragonkin soldiers, burnished with the essence of draconic immortality. Alas, the dragonkin never attained immortality, and perish as mere imitations of the ancient dragons.” as being forged from a Remembrance rather than "sharpening a Gravel Stone scale" makes it seem like one of the Dragonkin Soldiers was initially meant to be a proper boss with a remembrance, given that the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella has a totally unique Phase 2, I'd expect it was that one. Not sure why that was changed. 1:38:25 — Iji's confession (on top of being a quick translation with gender placeholder) is an item that I believe is specific to only appearing in the release version if you don't free Blaidd from the Evergaol, or if you find him in there without ever talking to Iji about it so that it clears up that information contextually. 1:39:44 — In 1.0, every time Lansseax appears, she's slightly older, which matches to the appearance & disappearance effect being the same way Placidusax warps through time. This theme crossup is actually important since later on (2:29:40), the description of the Remembrance of the Lichdragon lists the dragon's name as "Ransax" which would be a first pass translation of "Lansseax" rather than the name in release which is "Fortissax" her brother. This design difference in this version also explains why Fortissax uses the identical model as Lansseax, despite male & female Ancient Dragons having different head designs (Placidusax has one of both), but also why it uses an even more elaborate spinning version of the Lansseax's Glaive attack. Given the EXTENSIVE changes to "Farum Azula" having previously been the "Storm Aerie" (and all the drastically altered lore in the Banished, Exile, Drake, & Malformed armor sets detailing this), this is likely a lingering element of that significantly different version of the lore linking the winds around Stormvale to the land of the Storm Aerie as the land of the dragons that men were unable to reach in a much earlier design of the game that's still partially present with the radically different enemies in Leyndell. Finally, at 3:08:00 the crimson lightning is called "Wrath of Ancient Drakes" to show that theme being linked to rage which is likely also why we have the Red Eyes & Red Lightning being linked to the themes that eventually became separated into the Frenzied Flame. Lansseax was in love with Vyke (hence 2:39:00 his title as Consort rather than Lord Contender, being called The Dragonspear, and using inconsistent gold/crimson lightning). This also explains Placidisax's crimson reposte indicator at 3:16:43 not being gold, being unlike all the other enemies in the game. All those design concepts got HEAVILY differentiated in the release lore that is FAR less centrally focused around the dragons than pieces of the lore still in this version. 2:08:16 — The Skeletal Snails here break apart and don't disappear, so it seems like they were rigged to be one of the Those Who Live In Death skeletal enemies that can reform — but it's not implemented in 1.00 and in release they just vanish when killed. You'll see this with the snails in general like at 2:20:00 with the Spirit-Calling Snail. 2:38:23 — Esgar is the name of the Boss in release who is wearing the hood, so this looks like another 1.00 NPC not being significantly expanded upon for the release version of the story. 2:45:04 — The Ash of War for Wing of Astel & Bastard's Stars also have this different visual effect. I actually like this version of the fight a lot more than the release version, and also them both opening with the Meteor of Astel makes him far more intimidating like he's supposed to be as the one who destroyed the Nameless Eternal City. 2:50:45 — The Sacred Relic Sword arc on the ground also points the opposite direction. All-in-all, solid work and hopefully my observations are interesting! (I'm gonna have to go get Bernahl's Set in my 1.00 playthrough now that I know it's obtainable).
  • You struck gold with this series, sincerely hope this video gets places. Thank you for all your research.
  • @TheSilvantor
You'd think they'd have the majority of this stuff down WAY earlier in development. Item descriptions and even item names being changed last minute, enemy placement and so on. When you look at this version it makes you wonder just how consistent the environmental storytelling and item descriptions actually are when there's so many changes done last second.
  • @DrWhale-up7sf
Some things I noticed •Great epe is still in the game only used by Lionel, unfortunately this is similarly the case with almost every missing weapon and armor set •on ps4 version of 1.00 death birds have ghost flame attacks •all projectile AOW on weapons with bleed buildup cause bleed damage which makes halo scythe and moonveil very OP •no rot spells do rot build or every boss has extreme resistance to it the only exceptions are the hammer of rot farmed items from the avatars in haligtree and malenias spell when used by Gideon on the player •the halo scythe rings of light AOW is called Miquella’s rings of light •I have had godskin apostles theme play on the divine tower one but it seems random or potentially tied to NG+ •towering mushroom crown can also be looted from the mushroom people in the swamp of aeonia •killing lattena is the only way to get the silver mail set in 1.00 •the thops barrier scarab in the lakes respawns when you reload the area •it’s random if albus is in a pot or a statue I’ve seen both with no real explanation and the finger reader crone who tells you about him only ever says he’s in a pot and doesn’t change dialogue even if he is in a statue •in the vyke fight in the mountaintops his AOW does madness if it hits you directly •guard Loretta has no strake of marika meaning you have to repeat the area if you die to her •in the ps4 version at least some of the merchants have their release stock if you turn in their bell bearings •rennela phase 2 has a very rare cut move where several moons fall around you, I’ve only ever seen it twice •nox flowing hammer can be farmed from nox monks •the shaman set is unobtainable in 1.00 but the normal fur set is •in 1.00 you have to have the first encounter with lanseax for her to appear closer at the second location •I’ve never had the noble spawn in the yura church in 1.00 even when the quest wasn’t active not sure what the differences are •patches will be at the shaded castle even if you’ve already killed him in 1.00 •I have gotten special dialogue from gowry after buying pest threads not sure what the difference is •you don’t have to complete Millicent’s quest line to get the undodgeable swift glintstone shard in 1.00 •it seems random which tree sentinel has a torch or shield •erdtree seal never goes past 100 incant scaling in 1.00 in fact I’ve never been able to get past 300 scaling on any seal in 1.00 so incantations are definitely less viable •the blasphemous blade does holy damage instead of fire the AOW also does holy damage even though it’s literally fire coming out of the ground •boc’s questline is in 1.00 but he still disappears after maliketh •the cloaked banished knights in the capital can do healing incantations suggesting they weren’t placeholders but intended enemies for one wack moment in development •I’ve never seen the red albanorics use the incantations before not sure what the difference is •the haligtree knight set is unobtainable •the crystalians in the haligtree don’t drop their weapons •you can trick millicents sisters into rolling off with spell spam and Millicent can also be tricked off by the sister with the halo scythe AOW spam •not surprising but malenia can use both of her waterfowl dances back to back •malenia can parry you if you use certain weapons making the fight even worse •scarlet aeonia only costs 1 spell slot but can’t apply scarlet rot
  • @Velumbra
Ohoh? Three and a half hours, eh? Just.. uh.. gonna binge it all in one go like a reasonable person, don't mind me.
  • You're a beautiful maniac for this. This sort of public recordkeeping is awesome! BertoThankYou

Been following this since the start and I’m so proud and impressed to see it compiled like this. Happy to see other Fromsoft YTers commenting as well. Congrats on finishing this
