Ghost Train: Peterborough to Wisbech (Lost Railways Animation)

Published 2024-04-21
An animated past vs present look at the lost railway line from Peterborough to Wisbech! #peterborough #cambridgeshire #wisbech #railways #disused #beeching

The line was opened for goods traffic on 1 June 1866 and for passengers on 1 August of the same year. At Peterborough it started from the Midland Railway lines, on the west side of the GNR main line, and crossed both the Midland and GNR track by a bridge. The line was 27 miles (43 km) in length, to a junction at Sutton Bridge. The Midland Railway worked the trains, working to and from the GER station at Peterborough and calling at the GNR station en route. The line closed in 1959.

  • It's absolutely CRIMINAL what was done to the rail system in the 60's. Beeching, marples & Castle should have been jailed.

Just outside Murrow was the Joint Line Level crossing where the M&GN crossed the GE&GN line from March to Spalding.
  • Another evocative journey from my part of the country. Thanks for posting a truely great effort.
  • Brilliant video!! Those lost lines were part of my early years and something you never forget, I remember them well, probably because we travelled by rail more than by road back in those days.

Another great vid. Please do the Sprat & Winkle line! Andover to Redbridge, in Hampshire.
  • Great video as always. You've covered my local line some time ago, but always watch your latest releases regardless of where they are. Keep them coming.
  • Lovely video but a pity Wisbech North and Wisbech St Mary stations were omitted from your photographic evidence.
  • Wonderful! But why on earth strand rural communities and leave them at the mercy of unreliable and expensive buses? Now being built up, but still polluting cars have to be used. Bring back a light rail system..easily built on these flat lands.
