Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Birds of Prey movie is the first DC film of the new decade, and by the quality of it it seems DC is up to its old habits a'la Suicide Squad/Batman v Supeman/Justice League. But the interesting thing about Birds of Prey's failure is that its pretty much a copy paste of other successful movies: Pirates of the Caribbean and Deadpool. The character of Harley Quinn is a straight ripoff of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, whereas the narrative and the wonky world of Birds of Prey is a straight ripoff of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. But despite copying cinematic greats, Birds of Prey still manages to fail, because it completely misses the point of what makes Pirates and Deadpool great. So, in today's episode of Anatomy of a Failure, lets see how that happened and how DC/DCEU looks once again to be taking a backseat to Marvel/MCU.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Director Gore Verbinski and the crew set sail once again for this, the third chapter in the swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is hopelessly trapped in Davy Jones' locker after a harrowing encounter with the dreaded Kracken, and now Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) must align themselves with the nefarious Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) if they hold out any hope of saving their old friend from a fate worse than death. The East India Trading Company and its fearsome leader, Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), have taken control of the ghostly Flying Dutchman and its captain, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), and now the baleful Admiral Norrington (Jack Davenport) has taken the helm in a relentless bid to destroy every pirate ship in his path and bring the Age of Piracy to a violent close. Meanwhile, Will, Elizabeth, and Captain Barbossa navigate treacherous waters and face bitter betrayal as they set sail to gather the only army that can stand up to Beckett -- The Nine Lords of the Brethren Court. But Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the lords, and as long as he's stuck in Davy Jones' locker, Beckett and his nefarious armada are sure to emerge victorious. There's still hope, however, if the heroic team that includes Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), Pintel (Lee Arenberg), and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) can reach exotic Singapore and convince vulpine pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) to provide them with charts and a ship. But even the powerful Brethren Court may need a bit of help from volatile sea goddess Calypso in order to weather the coming storm. With the entire future of the pirate way at stake, everyone will be forced to choose sides while drifting precariously to the edge of the earth for one final, spectacular battle.

Also making Harley dumb completely dismisses the fact that she is a psychologist with a PhD. So she should be able to outwit her enemies. Even being under Joker’s spell they needed to show what her value to him was.
  • @fryphilip7474
I hate how they completely forgot that Harley is genius psychologist that was allowed access to the joker
  • "You are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of" "ah but you HAVE heard of me" love that line
  • It's actually funny how many movies come out worse due to re-writes when the original script seems to be so much better
  • So Harley Quinn trying to act like Deadpool? Meanwhile, Deadpool already went back to the DC Universe to stop Ryan Reynolds from reading the Green Lantern script.

I’m actually super happy about how this movie turned out because it’s gonna give DeadPool 3 so much roasting material
  • @OutofgasMOG
"Not only do they give you a movie that doesn't work, but also they flip you off with the potential of what it cold have been..." Is the most accurate description of every DCEU movie to date. I hate you for saying it.
  • @retrorocket562
Of course the greatest character of the movie is Kenobi.

Jack's whole thing was that he wasn't the main character of Pirates 1-3. Will and Elizabeth were always the protagonists and the stories were about them. Jack wasn't supposed to have a backstory. He was supposed to be there for his own reasons and his whole arc was him starting to go out of his way to help the main characters without ulterior motives.

"When presenting herself as a dumb drunk" Dude this is the EXACT problem with Movie Harley Quinn! Harley is a GENIUS. She BUYS IN to Joker's fallacy that "Chaos is the only truth" and she's the only other human on Joker's level of understanding of that methodology. She PRESENTS herself as slutty bimbo moron because it gets her a massive edge over everyone else. She is in truth extremely capable and intelligent, but she plays The Fool and The Rake as characters to lessen her open threat. She's a terrific character in the cartoon and her later comic adaptations, but the movies all make her an ACTUAL Bimbo, or an ACTUAL dummy, and neither is her character.
  • @ChatookaMusic
The really sad part is the whole faux fool thing would actually be a great fit for harley. Maybe repaint it where she still perceives the world incorrectly, but she still makes intelligent capable decisions within her own perception. Just because a character is delusional doesn't mean they have to be a nonfunctional child
  • this movie should have been about harley and harley only especially considering how in the comics (prior to this movie coming out) she never associated with the birds, quite the contrary she was a rival and had her own gang the gotham city sirens
  • Remember, writers: when you write female characters, it's more emphasis on CHARACTER and less emphasis on FEMALE.
  • I reeeaallllyyyyy hope the new batman movie won't be as bad DC really likes casting incredible actors for terrible movies
  • @znowicotton5176
That sandwich was the most moving heartbreaking scene in a movie I have seen all year...
  • @NapalmX717
Goddman dude, this video is going to be aging really well. Not only is Margot Robbie going to be cast in a new Pirates of the Carribean movie, but it's going to be the same writer who worked on this movie.
  • @Dokumashin
My only note is that the chemical factory wasn't jokers headquarters, it was basically their first "date" location.
  • @KimM13744
What made Jack Sparrow great for me was that he was not the main character, that role went to Will and Elizabeth. He just existed within the story and involved himself in the main narrative to his advantage whenever necessary to get what he wants, then abandoned it again. Making him the main character took away all of his charm and why he stood out so much in the first place, Harly Quinn was Sparrow as the main character.
