Gaborone ‒“Once you are in the lab you realize it’s not just a job, it’s more like a calling,” says Thongbotho Mphoyakgosi, a medical laboratory scientist at the National Health Laboratory in Botswana’s capital city, Gaborone. Mphoyakgosi has been a medical laboratory scientist for 20 years and has conducted testing for HIV drug resistance, COVID-19 and polio. “Someone sends samples to you, and you are the first one to see results and ask, ‘how is this going to impact the patient, the community as a whole, and then the country as a whole?’,” says Mphoyakgosi.
