We started this performance with PFC Band members Titi Tsira and Clarence Bekker while on a trip together in Rio de Janeiro. Wherever we traveled we would add more musicians, strings in Serbia, guitar and bass in Chicago, pandeiro in Brazil and the final piece came together with Sara Bareilles' vocal performance at Washington Square Park in NYC. The message of this song is as strong as ever and it's up to us to make the change we want to see. Music can show us the way.

Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

Clarence Bekker's voice is so clear and strong! He appears in other Playing For Change videos as well.
  • I write as Russia wages war on Ukraine and we are on the brink of world war three. Tears fill my eyes listening to this beautiful song. War is NOT the answer.

Yet that song is 50 years old and just as relevant today as it was in 71. Rest in peace Marvin.

As an American Vietnam Veteran the world needs peace. The people need to stand up, sing & say we’ve had enough! I’m 68 years old. I’ve seen a President killed, his brother, Cold War, blockade, duck & cover, riots, A President resigning in disgrace & it goes on. Twin Towers in NYC. I could go on but you know what I’m saying!

Whoever came up with the idea for Playing For Change has to be granted the 'freedom of the world ' as the concept is quite mesmerising in its quality and entertainment .

I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched and listened to this video and it never fails to move me. The artistry and musicianship is wonderful. As an avid fan of Marvin Gaye I never thought I’d hear another version of this song he recorded that I’d get so much from. Ironically it was inspired by co-writer Renaldo Benson, one of the Four Tops, who witnessed an act of police brutality in the 70’s, a very relevant subject today, proving some things haven’t change much for black people in the USA in over half a century. Despite the seriousness of what led the composer to write it, it will remain one of my all time favourite pieces of music.
  • The guy's voice from the Netherlands and the lady from South Africa's voice are off the chart!! Amazing all the way through...incredible musicians all over the planet!!

I love these international jam sessions. I kept wondering, throughout the song, what ol' Marvin would think of this take on his song. I think he'd be pleased.
  • This should get more recognition in mainstream media, so we can bring some love in here today, for all the world in 2022!

it was 1971. I was 23. Civil Rights raging.. As for music, Marvin Gaye was absolutely bringing it with "What's Going On".....Well in fact, he is still bringing it in this extraordinary rendition of his song and message that simply could not be more powerful, important or relevant today. This is just gorgeous!!

Thank you folks. Marvin is looking down in joy of your beautiful performances and sadness that his song is still even more relevant today.
  • This is amazing. And I am only discovering this today. Where was I? Thank you to all the wonderful artists for making us dream... and for putting a smile on my face.
  • @glennadamson9576
The musicians are well above board, people coming together from all across the globe singing and playing in harmony with nature and the people of the world, there's no high enough praise for this beautiful event, but I thank all of these musicians for a emotional experience and a ton of happiness I shall not some forget. To you all my deepest respect.
