Marques and Andrew discuss how some people could potentially be gaming Spotify through playlists before jumping into the new Samsung M8 Monitor and a new Playstation Subscription. They wrap it up with a new Dyson product that or may not be an April Fool's joke (we hope it is!) This is a fun one!

Spotify also has an "enhance" deal that adds similar music to playlists automatically

I’ve seen instagram ads for Spotify playlists, I’ve always wondered what’s in it for the playlist creator, makes sense now. They probably use ads to boost their playlist following and then get paid to add songs to it.

11:38 video game soundtracks are MASSIVELY overlooked by so many people including a lot of people that are into games. There are so many gems from 8-bit stuff til today. Chip tunes are dope and I really like the original stuff that people create for games specifically and not just playlists that have been put together out of already created music. I'd be curious to see a video game soundtrack list from you guys! Let's go!
  • Speaking as an artist, the Spotify game is definitely a thing. Artist pay Spotify curators everyday to get their song to blow up. Often times they are bot plays, but sometimes you will run into a playlist with real listeners and those will stick to the theme and will more subtly promote the unknown artists’ songs. A lot of indie artists do this with the hope of turning casual listeners into fans, since playlisting is the main way people listen to music on Spotify. Also Spotify doesn’t pay artists anything per stream. Currently the pay rate per stream is $0.003. Yup that many decimals. Also little known fact outside the music industry, but record labels (Warner, Sony, Universal, the big dogs) will shell out tons of money to get their new artists on playlists and boost their streaming numbers, so that the artist has an image of already having a buzz. Believe it or not, that image changes a lot of people’s perception of how to listen to the music and digest it. Often times people will gravitate to a bad song because of the name behind it. And ignore or not like a really good song, because it is from a lesser known name. And how do you know if that name is big or small? Their views, plays, monthly listeners, public perception, aka their digital image. So labels put a lot of money behind building up their artist’s image. And that is why the Spotify playlist system is often gamed by major labels and indie artists alike.
  • Just watched the last podcast and had no idea the next episode would be out only 2 hours later! Great timing to help finish up my Friday :). Thanks for the great content!

Netflix’s compression is waaay better on apps then in many browser windows. Having smart TV features isn’t crazy.

My first computer in 1998 had a PCI card that allowed you to watch TV on your computer. Record video, maximize, minimize, etc. Now, my first day of university was on September 10th, 2001. In my dorm room I paid for cable access so I had cable TV on my computer and everyone thought it was so cool. You know where this is headed. The next day, afternoon classes were cancelled, and my entire dorm was in my room watching the news on my computer. It was from a company called hauppauge (hop-hog). I used it until 2005 when I switched to a laptop.

The thing they missed when talking about the M8, is that it's technically a TV doubling as a monitor. I briefly tried the M5 and realized there were no physical buttons and everything had to be done through the TV remote (which is the same remote they shipped with their other TVs). I also don't think it's meant to look like an iMac, these look just like their flagship TVs (Q90r, Q90t, Qn90a, Qn90b)

I think something missing in the discussion of the Samsung monitor is how difficult it is to stream movies in 4K on a PC. Netflix officially supports 4K streaming through their app and on edge on Windows, but 90% of the time it's definitely not 4K for me. Probably some finicky requirement that I'm not meeting. Having it built directly into the monitor bypasses all those problems.

Back in the mid 2000s I used to listen to a very early podcast on my click-wheel iPod called Buzz Out Loud from CNET with Molly Wood and Tom Merritt. I wasn't even a big tech guy (and I'm still not) but I found tech news and banter a welcome relief from politics and other current events. I was a faithful listener of that show for several years until about 2010. Fast forward to present day, I had already been watching MKBHD videos for a long time, so when the WVFRM Podcast came out it was like stepping back into a pair of comfy shoes. Thanks guys for giving me something awesome to listen to on a weekly basis.

So cool to hear about Reply All, it's a podcast that really deserves more attention.

you guys this is genius. please get these in the studio to test. I work outside and in a wood shop where I constantly use headphones to block out really loud noise but also sometimes need air filtered masks for protection from MDF wood particles floating in the air off my CNC. I work 10 to 12 hours a day. Think about people in trades. Car painters need purifying masks and use headphones all day while working
  • I had a PSP that was gifted to me and I was glued to it all the time because it was the first console I owned before the smartphones, playstations, and switches
  • Plain and simple, when you're listening to spotify you're less likely to hit those playback buttons like skip but on YouTube you're watching a video therefor you're engaged and ready to skip unwanted content.
  • @WilltheWise3406
Dude I’m so happy you talked about the Spotify thing, I thought that was just me! I have a collaborative playlist for recommendations and they get spammed with all these different songs from small creators. I hope Spotify finds a way to address this. Does anyone else have this problem?
  • @SeekoGT
That Dyson unveil felt like an April Fools joke.. It's so.. Weird... I got the email announcement when it happened and was just like 🙃
  • @alwaysasn
Speaking of gaming the system I got a midroll ad with mkbhd clips as he tried to explain Marques' tricks for success lmao.
