In today's Ghost of Tsushima, I see what happens in the end if you complete the game as an honorable samurai. So I have played through Ghost of Tsushima once again to see if there is any difference or change in the ending of the game, if you play through the entire story as a samurai. I wanted to see if there was any change in dialogue, cutscenes the end game world, or anything else. The samurai playthrough required me to not use any Ghost tactics and to not enter Ghost Stance, other than when you have to for the Yarikawa Stronghold Mission. It was difficult playing as the honorable samurai, but it was worth it for the purpose to answer the many questions.

Im kinda disappointed that they didn't lean heavier into the karma choices. Even like a neat semi secret story you get if you do things as honourably as possible. I tried to be as honourable as I could and then when I got to the end and found out it didn't make a difference I was kinda disappointed. It does make me wanna go back through the game and jusy go ham though.
  • Imagine if there was a Honorable Samurai ending, it would mean that Jin Sakai, despite the overwhelming disadvantage of the Mongols actually knowing his strategy and the difference in numbers, he practically soloed the entire Mongol army without fighting underhandedly(admittedly with help from the allies he recruits, without them he could only get so far). That would go hard.

Salute you for the hard work. However my dear friend, Jin Sakai destiny is to be the first Ninja not the last Samurai.

The secret to the story is that, although Lord Shimura doesn't agree with Jin's methods, especially the use of poison, he is only forced to do something about it when the Shogun orders him to. What isn't really explored is why the Shogun makes the decision to be rid of such a valuable asset as Jin Sakai. The truth is, the Shogun is both jealous and afraid of Jin's legend. In medieval Japan, no one was regarded higher than royalty, who were thought to be living gods. Feudal Japan saw several clan wars throughout its history but when a lowly samurai who fights as Jin did for the people of Tsushima his legend and status outgrew that of the Shogun. Jin did what he did to save the people, tarnishing his honour to save lives and ensure the enemy would not win. The people admired that. It's even see that the samurai reinforcements sought to take control of Tsushima from Lord Shimura after the campaign. Lord Shimura's "honour" led to his own decline. And the samurai who were supposed to protect Tsushima all died in a massacre because they charged into battle against a massive, ruthless force and left the people defenseless all in the name of honour. However, if the samurai had set their "honour" aside briefly, used smart tactics and only some tricks Jin had to resort to, the mongols would've never taken Tsushima in the first place and Jin wouldn't have been such a problem.

Jins transition from honourable samurai into the ghost was amazing. He watched all his friends die at Komada beach. He watched clan Adachis fall, he witnessed the betrayal of Ryuzo and later on, Taka is murdered and so is his horse. In all those times it became more clear to him that the samurai were useless against the Mongol Empire. The Mongols knew exactly on how to counter the attacks from the samurai and Jin knew that if he wanted to save his homeland he would have to play dirty. In my eyes the end of GOT is a cliffhanger, Jin is a broken man, I imagine he would view himself as a monster and he knows only to kill

There is actually a secret line said if you go samurai route before freeing Shimura. Instead of the whole “you methods were brutal” crap, he says “your father would be proud”
  • Many people don't know this but if you are honourable throughout the gameplay, there is one small easter egg in rhe first mission in jogaku temple where we have to fight the mongol in the frozen lake. The more you assassinate the severe the storm is and the more you're honourable the less severe the storm is.

"I will train you to be the greatest warrior the Sakai clan has ever known" -Lord Shimura

It really breaks my immersion when i play completely like a samurai (expecting it to be like previous SP games) and people still tell me i have no honor. Specially since the actual combat system is way more fun than playing stealth, which is way too easy.

I wanted assassin's creed to make a japanese or chinese based game with ninjas or samurai but they just made a viking game, but sucker punch productions made my dream come true.
  • @ozyockward6779
I had to parry for a good 30 seconds cause I didn’t wanna fight him at all 😔
  • @wt3992
I’m not that surprised that the ending doesn’t really change sucker punch even mentioned that aside from actual gameplay the story is pretty much the same just how you choose to play the game will be different

It’s funny that sneaking around is considered so dishonorable in this game. When during the real life invasion, the samurai actually snuck up to the Mongols ships at night, and killed them in their sleep.
  • They should’ve had a karma system like RDR2, the more you use stealth, poison, etc, the more you become the Ghost. The more you just fight and stand-off etc, the more you become a samurai

Before doing the last few story missions, I completed all the side quests and cleared out the remaining camps. A small part of me regrets it because there is nothing to do except find random mongols or bandits roaming the roads.
  • honestly, i wish you could have chose which path you took, as the ghost, or Lord Sakai/ Shimura, i would have chosen to be a honorable samurai in a heart beat.
  • I just played the mission where you secure the forge. Taka said to me "I've never seen a samurai fight like that" while looking horrified, or sickened. The entire fight, I stood outside and fought people with my sword, and used my bow on the archers. I've been playing like a samurai, only doing otherwise when forced to by the game. I've found it disappointing how little that choice matters. The game still treats me like Jin is a ninja, constantly lurking in shadows and stabbing people in the back. I would have loved a karma system in the game, staying loyal to the samurai's Bushido code or fighting like The Ghost, with a different ending for each. I can only hope the railroading was to set up a sequel. To be fair though, the ending is hauntingly, mythically tragic, it was like watching an ancient legend be retold.
  • So far In my play through I would’ve liked to see much more struggle in Jin that casting aside his code was heart breaking and devastating for him.but to see where the conflict between shimura and Jin spans from my favourite line is “you have no honour” “and you are a slave to it!”
