Why has there been 3 taxi ranks in 5 years at Euston?

Taxis will be useful to get to Old Oak Common in order to catch your HS2 train home! I remember the old rank, it was crazy and the air wasn’t the cleanest 💨

Spoke to the mobility lounge staff on the Sunday it shut, as our driver dropped us off at the old taxi rank. He was confused as I’m a wheelchair user, so he still used the mobility drop off area. The mobility lounge staff said it’s going to be confusing for disabled passengers as they’re apparently keeping the mobility drop off zone in the old taxi rank, which I guess will be fine for dropping off. However they’re apparently keeping the same area for mobility pick up, but unless you time it when someone is dropping off a disabled passenger, you’ll be waiting ages for a taxi to come. They’re keeping the mobility drop off area here as the cctv that links to the mobility lounge so passengers can alert the staff to needing help are here (and none in the new rank) and also the help point is here too. So any passengers being dropped off at the new rank can’t alert the staff in the mobility lounge to them needing assistance to get into the station. So if I rock up with a large suitcase, I can’t ask for help like I could before via the cctv (as I’m deaf so can’t use the help point which is why both the help point and cctv are needed) or if someone who is blind is dropped off can’t ask for assistance navigating into the station (especially as the layout has changed) or someone who can’t walk far like my mum and would use a station wheelchair manned by station staff can’t request it. I’ll be filming a video the end of April about how it works/ doesn’t work as a disabled passenger.

The underground one was so good because you could get off the train and get into a taxi without encountering any bad weather at all. Now it’s a case of having to walk outside and round the block down the road …😢

Thanks for rekindling the memory of me and my late workmate stumbling into a cab back in 1979 and asking the driver to 'follow that cab' (containing some more of our workmates) to the Lamb Inn on Lambs Conduit Street for last orders. We were knackered and in need of an emergency pint before collapsing into our hotel beds to start again the next morning at 5am. It must have been Tuesday because Sunday & Monday nights had been in Glasgow, Tuesday London and Wednesday back again in Glasgow.

1:20 Ah, Trigger Happy TV. Good times that show. Didn't think at the time that was Euston.

So now both sides of Euston Square Gardens are entirely occupied by taxi ranks with no gardens.
  • @dsgb
Great to see you back on the mean streets Tom! 💜😀
  • Thanks for the heads-up that West Garden had closed - useful for my London trip planned for 23rd April. Appreciate the info, diagrams and history lesson!

When I started in 1960 there was a pair of gates to Euston on the Euston Rd .In and Out , worked well. When they put the underground one in I only used it when it was running. If you got stuck down there the pollution from all the diesals was suffocating.
  • Great video as always, good point about the busses with some of the busiest and most frequent in london trying to also exit, will be interesting to see at rush hour.

It’s an improvement from a passenger point of view in terms of it being clear which taxi you’ll be getting in but the pedestrian route from the station concourse is quite convoluted.

I hate the West Garden rank. I've only had one decent driver who started the meter after leaving the traffic lights. Every other cabbie from there starts the meter straight away and then it costs you about £1-1.50 to just leave the station. I stopped getting a cab from Euston and just walk to Euston road instead to save myself the extra cash.
  • @pow1983
Loving the Trigger Happy clip 😁 Mini cab! Mini cab!
  • Loving the vids mate 👌 would you be able do one on how existing taxi drivers feel on new people starting the knowledge because you are all competing and having more people starting would create more competition. Thanks and keep up the good work.
  • @Blueskinedbeast
I used that rank other night, Camden Town please arlington Rd, its a rock and hard place on getting there effectively we need the the left into Eversholt st
  • @user-or1rr6ym3h

@tomthe taxidriver You did videos about Heathrow and London City airports already but i would be curious to see if you ever have a Gatwick, Stansted or Luton run. Do you even take these rides?
