Pan's Labyrinth is a brilliant movie that takes you into the mind of a suppressed child dealing with the horrors of life and her way of escape. My all time favourite.
  • Possibly the best and most interesting film introduction of this entire AFI series! Brava to Emilia!

Emilia just explains this movie so perfect. It chills you, and it warms you......She is as magical as the movie itself. One of my favourite movies of all time.

You don't take orders without question. That's the moral of Pan's Labyrinth. When the government seizes absolute power, those who question the authorities are the heroes.

not really important but to me it made the viewing experience even more magical- being mexican this film blew me away at the calibre of talent that's just waiting for a platform anywhere and in my home country. I've always been fascinated by magic and fantasy films. This is subtley also a psychological thriller/science fiction in a way. I already knew del Toro was good but he picks his titles too loosely and can get carried away by his less original works which are usually a miss with me. However, this being a Mexican production mostly with a Spanish face, naturally, the world building and just operatic essence of the film and what it manages to get right was a first WOW for adult oriented fantasy, and it had no nude scenes. The violence can feel a bit much but story is a war fantasy movie. War does not shy away from such brutal acts wherever you go. Especially a Civil war. Especially fascist Spain. I care less about that as I got older. My main fascination is the impeccable production for basically unknowns on all fronts of the film at the time it released. It was certainly a welcome change from the usual commercial novela/Televisaesque titles pumped into the Latin Amwrican and American markets. This masterpiece continues to stand the test of time.
