From a payment card that does not allow cash withdrawals, to mandatory community service, Germany is introducing measures to make the country less attractive to migrants. The country remains the destination of choice for asylum seekers within the EU. More than 330,000 people sought asylum there last year: almost a third of all applications in the EU, according to the European Asylum Agency. But the new measures – agreed by the government and regional leaders last November – are beginning to appear in municipalities across the country, especially in eastern Germany, where regional elections are due in September. The far-right AfD party is leading the polls there and its main campaign theme is immigration. Our correspondents report.

Shouldn’t this have been a requirement for asylum seekers in first place..? seeking asylum doesn’t mean you get a freebie lifestyle..
  • @keys1420
So you give them a allowance for cleaning their room? What a joke

I lived in Germany just before Covid, I helped my ex do a newspaper job and we’d start at 3am. And every morning about 10 of these migrants would be up drinking all night everyday. Making fun of us doing a job.

These aren’t refugees. Words have meaning, stop lying.

80 cents per hour to clean their own room, kitchen and toilets. That's insane. I wish my government would pay me 80 cents per hour to clean my own room, kitchen and bathroom.
  • They’re upset they have to work ( barely it seems), for their free food, housing, cash and medical? Unbelievable!!!
  • @Here-123
They are receiving 460 euros of monthly social benefits and one complains that he cannot buy coffee in a neighboring town, but I did not hear him say Thank You for providing your resources.
  • @gaarn2672
Why dont they go to rich Saudi, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman..
  • Why is it "extremist" to want to control who comes into your country and lives on taxpayer money?
  • @marcobagut
Wow! I mean… They need to clean their own dirt and not have Germans cleaning for them? That is really incredible!
  • @karl5404
Your "far right" sounds more like common sense.
  • Working 4 hours a day? How about 8 hours a day and keep them off the streets. How about ditch digging?
  • @ApLemon
It is outrageous that illegal immigrants send to their countries the money they got for free from the taxes of the citizens that worked hard.
  • @blahblah4129
Complaining, complaining, complaining. These folks are so ungrateful.
  • @ozkroca9003
Should read: Germany introduces perfectly reasonable and necessary measures to assure migrants actually contribute to the country. This should be implemented in every country.

Beggars can’t be choosers. If you don’t like it go home.
