What Happened After the First Crusade? - FULL DOCUMENTARY

Published 2023-11-22
The First Crusade – one of the most unlikely success stories in history. A motley army of warrior pilgrims traveled thousands of miles from western Europe to the Holy Land, where they battled some of the most formidable eastern powers of the period. The crusaders won, but then, most of the crusaders went home. Left behind were the few knights, adventurers, priests and pilgrims intent on fighting for survival in these distant lands. It was an age of warrior kings, of battles to the death against impossible odds. The Kingdom of Jerusalem, led by Baldwin I, and the Principality of Antioch, led by the Norman Tancred, were only beginning to take shape. How did the remaining pilgrims survive? How did the newly emerging Crusader States endure? How did the neighboring Muslim rulers and peoples react to the presence of these new kingdoms? Today, on Real Crusades History, we’ll follow the exhilarating early history of the Crusader States, and answer the question: what happened after the First Crusade?

The crusades are too often overlooked or distained as simple wars of greed and hate, yet these videos prove that this couldn't be farther from the truth, with the centuries of interaction, politics, and diplomacy in between. Thank you so much for making these, and keep up the good work!

Anna's possible crush on Bohemund never ceases to be funny.

Long live Tancred the true prince of Antioch. Taken too soon

I'm glad to see you delve into this history of the earlier crusader states and their struggle to survive. These men had especially bold faith in the most dire circumstances. Excited to see more in coming videos.

I’m so happy omg I’ve been waiting for this for so long. The history of the early crusader states is far forgotten and overlooked with no real videos or documentation like this on it! So happy and excited

So excited for this episode. This is the important part. You better cover their building projects in this! Their architecture features some of my favorite examples of Norman Gothic Revival!
