Chinese coast guards were pictured wielding axes and knives before a Filipino soldier lost his thumb in a clash in the South China Sea.

The Philippine sailor suffered the injury after what its military described as "intentional-high speed ramming" by the Chinese Coast Guard.

The incident is the latest outbreak of violence amid heightening tensions over who owns the disputed seas.

China claims 90 percent of the sea as its own sovereign territory but Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries contest that.

Both China and the Philippines have accused each other of taking provocative action that infringes on their territory.

Monday’s clash occurred when Chinese boats blocked an attempt to resupply a Filipino outpost with food.

As Blinken says, the Philippines is on the table now
  • China sent the coast guards to deal with Phillippines special force, while warships with hundreds of missiles stayed behind doing nothing but smiled and watched. How kind is that

Chinese police arrested Philippine soldiers? Does it sound weird?

How civilized they are. They used axes, sticks, and knives to fight, not bombs, missiles, and tanks, which may terminate many lives.

I don't think the word "seized" & "confiscated" is the right term. I think the right word is Harass & Stole The Chinese coastguard "Harass" two inflatable boats from the Filipino Soldiers. They also "Stole" weapons that were onboard the "harass" boats.

Government needs to change the rule of engagement. Soldiers should have the right to defend themselves. The government throw these soldier out there and let it get bullied everyday. It's so incompetent.

Philippines at its maximum tolerance. ... But there is always a limit for every human patience, if those Chinese Coast Guards keeps on harassing Filipino troops, they must expect the consequences.

Why can’t we retaliate or at least defend themselves look at how awful they treat our soldiers look at ours just standing there doing nothing we should change the rules of engagement. It’s too painful for us civilians seeing our troops treated like this because of their maximum tolerance mandate.
  • But, but, ccp always talks about peace. Would they do the same if it was the us navy dropping off supplies?
  • And why wasn't it mentioned that 1 filipino soldier lost his thumb because of this incident?
