And sadly the worst case scenario happened as Jeff had said, no one anticipated that storm to be such a disaster that it is, and three years later it is still having an effect on many people.

The worse case scenario happened. I was in Biloxi, MS where the storm actually hit. I didn't evacuate, it was unreal!
  • @dknights411
Actually, the worst case scenario for NOLA was if the levees breached and the pumps failed, which they did, and the rest was history.

Looking for Cantoris interview with work model folks, he said levees would break, but civil engineers said no. Cantoris was getting frustrated. He knew it was a mistake not to get em out.

@atomickilla You're right Katrina did make landfall in Buras...but Plaquemines Parish is not a suburb of New Orleans and the eye never went over the city of New Orleans...The western eyewall went over New Orleans but the eye went over Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes and made it's final landfall on the Louisiana/Mississippi border along the Pearl River..Slidell and communities in western Hancock County, MS. (Pearlington, Lakeshore, Cleremont Harbor) were in the eye during its final landfall.

  • @dknights411
Hmm... didn't think about it that way. Great point, karol. Just out of curiosity, what was your opinion on FEMA's mismanagement of the recovery? What exactly did you think went wrong in your opinion?

Amen jeremiah20092009! I rode out Katrina on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi near Biloxi and it was horrible! Miles and miles of homes, landmarks, etc. gone, gone, gone!
  • @tigerbait134
technically it did make landfall in pearlington, ms. but before that it made landfall in buras, la
  • @jah0524
Not true. The eye was so large, the western eyewall passed over the edge of eastern New Orleans. Check out the infrared radar track.

To add to the convo, although I do believe MS received the worst damage from the Hurricane itself, NO received just as much because of the breakdown of the levees. On top of that, NO had more people that stayed in the city because of poverty. In addition, the government still, to this day, never commented on those people who died in a shelter in New Orleans East. In the end, everyone LA, MS, and Alabama suffered.

Hurricane Katrina didnt make landfall on New Orleans. The eye actually made landfall on the town of Bay St. Louis, MS. New Orleans did suffer indeed, however, the MS coast did recieve more damage. Its safe to say that New Orleans did recieve damage from the flood, but miles and miles of absolute beauty on the MS Coast were completely destroyed. God Bless those who are still rebuilding. One day, home will be home again. j

@jeremiah20092009 Actually, you're very wrong about the landfall. It made landfall in Buras, Louisiana, which is located in Plaquemines Parish which is a suburb of New Orleans. Technically, the eye did go over New Orleans kind of making landfall.
