What's it like growing up transgender?

'In My Shoes' asks five transgender young people what it's like to be them - the awesome times, the challenges and how they've gotten through them.

This short, collaborative documentary film is an initiative of the Transgender Anti-Violence Project at The Gender Centre Inc., NSW and is produced by Tahlia Trijbetz, the Transgender Anti-Violence Project (TAVP) Officer.

It is co-directed by Walkley Award winning journalist, Monique Schafter (Hungry Beast / 7.30 ABC TV) and award winning director/cinematographer, Mat Govoni.

Thank you to development consultant, Kate Doak.

'In My Shoes' features the original rap "Spring" by transgender artist, Harri Harding.

We hope that this film will serve as a resource for the wider community to better understand the issues facing young transgender and gender diverse people. We also hope that it encourages transgender and gender diverse people of all ages to come forward and access support if they need it.

If you are experiencing any kind of violence, harassment, intimidation or abuse, the Transgender Anti-Violence Project at the Gender Centre can support you.

  • "there's no right way to be transgender. there's no wrong way to be yourself" :')

My parents don't believe I'm a transgender male because of the fact that I wear pink or have worn dresses in the past. I was and still am a very girly person. But I AM a boy.

The artist/photographer is really attractive. Apart from that little side note, this was a really good video :)
  • Why do we only ever recognize in these films the masculine trans men and feminine trans women?? I swear if I hear one more limelight shed on "I was a tomboy and I guess that was a precursor" shit I am going to rip off my face and throw it at someone! I was never much of a tomboy. I was a whimsical fairytale inspired girly boy in a female child's body. I have always been a boy and me being a dreamer and enjoying the sensation of flowing fabrics around my body does not make me less of one. It's total crap that these films always say "there's not just one right way" yet inform everyone there is only one way because it pushes that trans men have to be overbearingly masculine and trans women have to be extravagantly feminine to have the identity respected as valid. Someone should really make a film about something other than these overly precise stereotypes
