The origins of Cobra Commander are shrouded in mystery, and often contradicted by the villain himself, perhaps in an attempt to perpetually keep his enemies in the dark when it comes to their eternal nemesis.

THis video barely goes into Cobra Commander's origin story. Here's the full story (from the marvel version). Cobra Commander was originally used car salesman from a fictional town in Staten Island called Springfield, not to be confused with the real-life Springfield, Illinois. Springfield's government was corrupt and put enormous pressure on working families and local business owners in favor of wealthy outsiders. When Cobra Commander's business fell on hard times, the government refused to help him. The future commander took the loss of his business very hard and wound up driving his wife and son away. He blamed the American government for his misfortune, although it was only partially to blame. Around this time, the Commander's brother died in a car accident that also killed Snake-Eyes' family. Cobra Commander's vendetta against Snake Eyes led to hard master's death and Storm Shadow being framed. Cobra Commander realized that he could abuse the system as well and began his bid for power. Using his incredible talent as an orator, the commander swayed the residents of Springfield to his cause, officially starting the cobra organization.

My favorite part of his original origin was that what got him into starting Cobra was a need for revenge for his brother Dan. From Wikipedia "When Dan returned from Vietnam, he displayed deep psychological trauma, and took to self-destructive behavior, resulting in his death in a car collision with another family. Devastated by the loss of his brother, the future Cobra Commander blamed the family's survivor: another war veteran, against whom the young Cobra Commander formed an elaborate revenge scheme." That soldier he blamed was Snake Eyes. Cobra Commander's brother killed Snake Eyes' family as they were on their way to the airport to pick Snake Eyes up when he returned from Vietnam.

If I remember the comic book correctly, CC tells Destro that starting COBRA after being a used car salesman was a step towards becoming more honest.

I still prefer the Chris Latta version best. Especially the out there over the top origin in the 1987 animated movie. "They just don't make Terrorists like they used to.........COBRRRRRRRAAAH!!!"

Am I the only one who actually kind of likes the GI Joe movies? They're so action packed!

  • @5TailFox
Yes, the true Cobra Commander. Not that swiveling weasel from the tv show. The Cobra Commander of the comics would kill the tv Cobra Commander, with his bare hands.
  • @EloyCanto
Wait, when they change he's origin, as far as i remember the Cobra Commander was the young brother of the man (a vietnam vet i think) who car crashed and killed Snake Eyes family, and because of that he started the cobra organization (first as a ponzy scheme and sort of a cult) to get he's revenge and eventually take over the world, was much later when he started the "Fred" program to get duplicates in case he died.
