All too often, ambitious professionals reach their goals only to find themselves overworked, exhausted, burned out, and resentful. Working hard and pushing our limits is necessary for growth, but not when it’s at the expense of our health and happiness. In this talk, Dr. Liz Aguirre shares the key steps she took to become more energized, and more productive and achieve greater success while ending the burnout trap once and for all. Dr. Liz Aguirre is a physician and entrepreneur who has reinvented herself multiple times. Growing up in poverty taught her the importance of grit and hard work which served her well as she worked to obtain her medical degree. However, like many healthcare professionals she struggled with professional burnout. Through a renewed commitment to self-care and self-compassion she was able to heal and has found herself leading others to do the same. Dr. Aguirre is a graduate of The University of Texas San Antonio, completed her medical degree at Texas A&M College of Medicine and her internal medicine residency at Baylor Scott & White in Texas. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

  • It’s so refreshing to watch a talk about burnout where the person actually gets to the root cause! Really great talk. The cause of burnout has one word = NEGLECT.

Wow... this talk hit me deeply. I have lost count of how many times I have thought or said, "I have no choice". Sharing a humble background and now holding a management position on a top financial firm, unfortunately I share the pattern of making decisions out of fear, over working myself and dealing with insomnia. I hope that like you, one day I can break out of this cycle.

Liz! It was SUCH an honor to be with you at TEDx Manitou Springs and I am so excited for the world to hear this idea!!! You are such an inspiration and I loved your talk.
  • Me first, better sleep times, better meal times, time to re-energise and live as my best version of myself, this is worthwhile working on myself Thank you for bringing yourself to speak your words x
  • One of many great Tedx Talks. I've been down her road. When I finally became aware of the root causes of what drove me I started making much better choices of what I needed to do. Getting to the root cause is so important to our understanding and personal growth. I suggest watching her video again, then asking yourself, "Why do I keep doing this?" WHY is a powerful word. You have to keep asking WHY until you get to the real cause. If you don't get to the root cause you will not be working on the right solution. Just this morning I was meeting with my 7th grade TeamMate and I asked him why he wanted to stay on the A honor roll. He said he wanted his mother to be proud of him. When I ask him, why again, he admitted he wanted his mother to love him. In other words, he feared that his mother might not love him if he did not get on the honor roll. .
  • Examine our fear and learn how to live with it so we can create space for things that matter more. Thanks, Liz! Your talk is very helpful.

This was a powerful talk. I still have a lump in my throat thinking about her childhood and the story about the dumpster. Thank you for sharing your experience and wise advice.

Liz! Thank you for this amazing speech. I keep in mind that we're burnt out and stressed because of fear. The solution is not to eliminate fear, but to go through it.
  • Excellent talk! Very powerful words, and important message. I hope people watch this over and over again until it sinks in!
  • Thank you for courageously moving through your fear to share this story and message!
  • @MariamaWhyte

  • @EatRoamHeal
Brilliant and heartfelt talk!!! So much truth here.
  • @davidrieger1483
I can relate to that. Pushing yourself to work harder and trying to prove you belong. And then the part about not recognizing your own self.
  • Your talk was amazing! I certainly can relate to professional burnout. I would say that I may be quadruple certified and always recognized the signs of it. Your words you spoke are the same words I used. Our own childhood experiences that make us stronger also contribute to giving others more than what we give ourselves. My latest professional burnout had the universe hitting me between the eyes with a reminder that it is time for you to take care of you. This medical situation knocked me, a healthy and fit person, off of my feet. Stress and lack of work-life balance led me to serious health issues. Now, it is necessary to take care of me, not my family or the community. Thank you.

Thank you... this talk was eye opening about a fear I wasn't aware of. It hit me so deep especially the part about fears. Your story about the dumpster day made me realize a story from my childhood and a fear that s now holding me from prioritizing my precious life.
