In Ottawa, federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller and Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault announce that Canada will now set numbers for temporary residents as part of its annual immigration targets, starting this fall. Minister Miller says changes are needed to make the immigration system more efficient and sustainable.

The federal government plans to decrease the number of temporary residents to 5 per cent of Canada's population over the next three years. Temporary residents currently make up 6.2 per cent of the population. The government will also reduce the number of temporary foreign workers entering Canada in certain sectors, as of May 1.
