In the 8th century Middle East, a new dynasty seized control of one of the world’s greatest empires – the Islamic Caliphate. Though little remembered in the west today, the Abbasids reigned for five centuries. They oversaw an era of Islamic military dominance... city-building… brilliant scholarship, and technological innovation. It has come to be remembered as Islam’s ‘golden age’. This is the rise and fall of the Abbasid Caliphate.

It is always so tragic to hear about the cities, architecture and libraries being destroyed throughout history. So much knowledge has been lost
  • @The_Daily_Tomato
I may be a European atheist, but the sacking of the house of wisdom and the near destruction of Baghdad remains for me as one of the saddest moments in world history.
  • @Dr_Holiday
Whenever the Muslims fought amongst themselves and turned away from Allah, Allah humiliated them again and again and again, even to this day.

Why is nobody pointing out the complete inaccuracy of the section about 'Jizya' & 'Dhimmi' starting from 3:37 - 4:00 ? No, jizya was not an extra tax! It was an alternate tax paid by non-muslim populous under muslim rule in exchange for military service and protection. Jizya was a much smaller amount in comparison to the tax paid by muslim populations called Zakat and jizya was not taken from the elderly, the poor, women, the ill and those that carry out religious functions like priests, monks, rabbis etc.. There was also cases where non-muslim tribes offered to participate in military service and thus be exempt from paying jizya.

This is why learning history is important….nuance.
  • @NadeemHayek
A ‏shiver runs through me each time I hear how the newly Muslim state conquered both the great Byzantine and Sassanid empires in just few years while they both have tried to conquer each other for centuries. This is unprecedented in history
  • @tabshoura
As an Arab, I thank you. You've added nuance to historic events, which enriched my understanding.
  • @OreogudN
There's no channel like yours, the narration, the script, the overlay just absolutely splendid. Keep up the good work
  • As an Iraqi, I spent my entire childhood reading about the Mongols and their brutal attack on my hometown, Baghdad. Despite my ferocious emotions, I was unable to do much about it. Therefore, I vowed to teach my children about the atrocities that the Mongols had committed. Later in life, I witnessed history repeating itself with the fall of Baghdad, this time at the hands of the Americans. Once again, I found myself powerless in the face of the cruelty of the new invaders. As a result, I made another promise to myself to pass on the story to my children and have them promise to do the same with their own children. We will never forget the events that occurred and the impact they had on our homeland.
  • During the Second Gulf War, museums and archeological sites were sacked before the complacent eyes of American Soldiers, who were much more interested in guarding the Ministry of Petroleum. Thousands of ancients pieces disappeared for good while the Western media turned a blind eye on it. Some things never change.
  • @Haka61276
This documentary opens my mind to go deeper into more exploration of the Islamic history, especially the books. Thanks.
