Large Hail from Nocturnal Oklahoma Thunderstorms (June 7, 2021)

Published 2021-06-07
Strong to severe thunderstorms developed after midnight across SW Oklahoma Sunday night. I went to have a look at how intense these nocturnal storms can be, typical in the central U.S. in the summer. This video shows the severe hailstorm that struck Elgin, OK at around 3:30 AM with a nearby report of baseball-sized stones in this storm! I estimated a maximum hail diameter of about 1.5 inches (ping-pong ball). I also caught the tail end of a severe windstorm closer to dawn, associated with a much larger system.

That's awesome! I was chasing that night and there were tree branches all over my yard. The April 2020 hail storm was a rocker as well. Great video

Storms like this in Southern California are rare, except during El Nino and usually happen in February.

Wouldn’t have fancied filling up with all that rain and hail being slammed into your face by that wind!
