Correction: Caves most assuredly do have shafts. A vertical drop, where the caver would have to abseil, is called a shaft. A daylight shaft starts at the surface, meaning light can shine into the shaft. There are also pitch and single drop shafts, which refer to other forms of verticals in the cave.
