For all you Half-Life fans, did you know about a cut Half-Life 2 enemy called the particle storm?

In the original version of Half-Life 2, Eli Maxwell, (a cut character who would be combined with Captain Vance and become Eli Vance) warns Gordon about running from a "green flicker of light" if he sees one. He goes on to explain that he made the mistake of studying it, which cost him his leg. He believes that this "Particle Storm" is sentient and hopes they can communicate with it and recruit it for the resistance.

i love how he actually sounds haunted by the story he's telling

The reason I liked the HL2 Beta was because it seemed to take advantage of the fact you were brought into this new world / environment completely shrouded in mystery. There are so many beings in the Beta which are completely unknown, their origins only mysteries and I loved that. I loved the fact even the NPCs themselves acknowledged these beings as mysterious alien forces. The combine sort of does that, but the beta really did have a bunch of creatures completely shrouded in mystery, more so than the final version of the game. It really puts the player in a very uncomfortable spot of not knowing what to expect and only following their instincts which I adore.

If only we actually couldve seen it, and it wasnt removed.

I love the idea that Eli lost a limb to this creature and still wants to reach out and join forces with it instead of holding some ugly vendetta

"If only we could communicate with it, with a force like that on our side, that could be a powerful ally" I can tell from that line, that you were originally going to be able to recruit the particle storm, like how you recruit the antlions in the final version of the game

its weird how a sentient creature is called The Particle Storm

Such an underappreciated creature. Much more interesting than Combine-Synth-Soldier-Cremator-things everyone loves.

Great voicework here. The actor really sells the horror of the scenario.

this dudes voice would be perfect for HLA's post credit scene

I don't know why but I find what he says just terrifying. How he describes, is just so chilling.

I wish Valve could make another Half-Life game from this story, with American East coast style C17, Air Exchange, the wasteland, Combine draining oceans, Captain Vance and his forces, Eli Maxwell, Weather control, the Consul and more.

I kind of like the mystery here. Demystifying everything has truly ruined many great things, the sense of mystery about the particle storm is great. The vagueness and unknowableness makes it memorable.

If anyone is curious, here is what the Particle Storm looks like ingame. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/half-life/images/8/8c/Particle_storm_official.png/revision/latest?cb=20180615113155&path-prefix=en It was also cut because of Script issues and caused crashes in builds. Pretty much was because of coding issues and impossible to design in-engine, simular to the Hydra Tenticles from E3. It might still be functional via Scripted sequences in lost Gold Source builds in Storyboard missions where the audio came from (Meaning Post-FREE TVs or Later on in 2000 or 1999) though but we will never know because those have yet to be leaked or dumped.

That storm is supposed to be green, it was surrounded with light green thunders and it can chase you. It kills you with one hit.

I still love this audio, it’s so creepy and makes the Beta seem even more interesting.
  • Hearing his explanation, I thought he was referring to the portal storms and how dangerous they were. It wasn't until I checked the description of the video that got that it was an enemy, and that... whatever this "particle storm" was going to be, it would have definitely been something scary, and for it being a Half Life game I mean SCARY. I'd imagine it'd almost be like the Half Life equivalent of the Waterwraith....
  • @geeworm
The voices in the beta had far more emotion in it. You can feel the conversation and how he feels about a terrifying entity only known as a 'green flicker of light.'
  • @ThunderXtaTic
"Yeah there's a powerful living particle storm that has killed many people and took off my leg. But I think we should try to stop and talk to it! Good idea, right guys?" Seriously though, having the ability to fight alongside and presumably commanding it as well would've been badass.
