The “CAGED System” Explained

I’m doing my best to explain what is now called the “CAGED system”. To me it’s not a system at all. It’s the ultimate concrete foundation of the guitar from the very beginning. Period.

Everything that’s ever been played is connected to this foundation. It’s not new and it’s not changing and it’s not going away. The faster you get into this the faster you’ll improve on every level.

Have fun with it and don’t forget to use your ears!

Turn on your phone and be yourself. It’s golden. We are super fortunate you give us a few minutes of guitar wisdom and practical application.

In a sea of channels that just show sponsored/new gear content; its refreshing watching your channel of actual playing!
  • @lloydsplace101
Finally a REAL opinion on what most people try to pass off as a BIG secret
  • @TheFeelButton
I'm just gonna keep on working the shapes until you tell me something new and fancy has come along. Cheers Guthrie!

The appeal to me of your videos is that they are unscripted, unedited and authentic. I'm a guitar player and guitar related info is why I'm here. Unless you learn to survive setting your hair on fire every week you will probably continue to attract musicians and not casual viewers. I'm glad you know your lane and you stay in it. Of all the YouTube music teachers I've watched (dozens over the years) you have been my biggest influence. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Dude the simplicity of this explanation is legendary, it's switched on a massive light bulb and connected so many things. Thank you for sharing...!!!

Dude you just keep being you... No frills, just meat and potatoes. Thats why we dig you man! We will hang out someday dammit!
  • @Drew-B365
Brother I'd rather listen to you record on your iPhone then 97% of these other guys out there! You keep doing you cause at the end of the day you need to be able to close your eyes and open your ears for this stuff! I hope to see the trio tomorrow night my friend as I will be in town! Keep putting out those sweet sweet sound waves my friend!
  • @BobSacamano226
Blown away you only have two guitars. Love your videos, keeps me going. Thank you so much
  • This is absolute gold to someone learning the instrument. In fact to any guitar player, except uncle Larry ; )

I have tried to learn and understand CAGED for years. It was never explained to me more than just the C chord voicings up the neck. I have learned more from three of your videos than I have in years of lessons. Thank you!

GT you are such a genuine man. Thanks for your guitar wisdom.

I literally click on any of your videos to just simply hear you "noodle"...that's some damn good pasta

Motivated, inspired and heartbroken.. all in one video! Amazing to witness that, and in the best setting relatable to the rest of us... sitting in a room, alone, trying to figure that instrument out! Your lesson was pure gold for me. Thank you.

THANK YOU, GT! Your explanation, and the fact you share all of this wonderful information with us is SO appreciated!! To all who struggle with this, just keep at it, your playing WILL go next level if you put just a little bit of time into this kind of study. Seriously, just 15 minutes of playing with purpose per day will have you understanding this stuff all over the fret board. The thing that helped me the most is learn all the shapes in one key first. (I started with C) Do that and nothing else until you can play that comfortably up and down the neck in all the shapes. Then add the fifth of that key and play those two keys in all of the shapes and nothing else. In just a couple of weeks you won't believe how much knowledge of the guitar you'll have. Outstanding stuff I wish I knew 30 years ago!! God bless you, GT and everyone embarking on this amazing journey!! 🤠👍

My playing has grown exponentially since finding GT's vids here on the YouTube. I am signing up for his Artist works stuff as it is mind blowing to be able to watch a vid like this and his last one and be able to start ripping Samba-like solos and rhythms. I cannot wipe the smile off my face. Thanks as always GT. You make us all better guitarists.
  • @JDWH
Cmon Guthrie there’s clearly an old Duo Sonic right behind you 😂
  • @JGAbstract
The best YouTube guitar resource for keeping yourself on track.
  • @JP-oe6pw
So lucky to get professional advice and lessons for free. Really is much appreciated Guthrie, you've made me a better player

Stay in your own lane!!… love it buddy. I don’t cut my own hair, I don’t do my own dental work…I can text, take pictures and make phone calls on my phone… I just want to play guitar and fun doing it!
