As Hitler's Blitzkrieg marked the start of WW2 in Europe, it also signalled the start of a new type of warfare. This would be a war where the significance of machines, not manpower would be the deciding factor between win and loss. This new type of warfare also brought a new issue into the fold, the supply chain of oil.

Took me a minute, but I saw what you did there. The lack of references of the oil in the video, especially in the second half of the video symbolizes the lack of physical oil the Germans had for the war effort especially in the second half of the war. Revolutionary documentary style.
  • Any serious student of WW2 understood that oil was the single most critical material. That Germany did not have enough pretty much guaranteed its final defeat; Japan as well.

FYI: This is only 1/2 of the episode It's name is: Battlefield S6/E5 - Campaign in the Balkans Search for that & it will come up 1st in your search It's a Truly Excellent episode, Highly Recommended. Enjoy
  • Another big problem, besides the oil supply, the allies were bombing the ball bearing factories.
  • Can't tell you how much I appreciate the interjections of helpful maps in these docs! Thank you 🙏
  • Love these history docs narrated by cool Brit, while vintage video flickers along 💖 Many thanks 🙏
  • The oil issue was very well portrayed in the movie, Battle of the Bulge, when one officer commented to another that Germany were destined to loose when the USA could supply its troops so well & enough more to fly over a freshly made chocolate cake from a mother to her son on the front. Even the troop replacement tactic was in error when the baby birth program was started. That alone to end up with trained replacements would take at least another 15-20 years.
  • If you have to invade Russia in order to get a vital resource, you’ve already lost 🤦🏻‍♀️

The script writing for this documentary is a level of intelligence above; I could listen to it all day...brilliant!

There was a saying coined by soldiers on the Eastern Front: "The lucky man is sent to France and returns to see his wife, but the one sent far away to the East can expect only to lose his life".
  • Okay so 1/4 of the vid is a review of the war in general. No real discussion of how much oil germany needed used or alternatives. Not a good vid for the title
  • The Royal Navy conducted a naval blockade of Germany that cut off traditional oil supplies and raw materials. It took time, but the blockade had a drastic effect on the conduct of the war. Germany had to rely on expensive synthetic oil and the only European source at Ploesti.
  • The Soviets not entering Warsaw was not at the start a bad act. They needed to stop and refit, after terrible battles. Later, I think it was a bad act not to go in

In 1939 Goering must have weighed over 300 lbs, and growing...

Ya. These micro-glimpses and deep-dives into details behind the commonly and unfortunately overly general gist of war campaigns taught in history classes. Very cool histories of individual personalities too. Among this channel and two others I frequent, I am thrilled to have such a wealth of well-researched material presented.
