i don't know why people are criticizing the vocals. his pitch is pretty much perfect. You can't ask a band to mimic the vocal style of the band they are covering, that would just be stupid. He sounds great.

Idk why people think a talented band can't duplicate other styles of music. They probably grew up listening to metallic and playing thier music. Highest form of respect right here.
  • Sum 41 doesn’t get enough love for their actual musicianship. As a pop punk band, they are better than what most people think
  • The post pop-punk era Sum 41 is very interesting. What's funny about this cover is that this performance is AFTER their guitarist that brought the metal influences to some of their earlier stuff left the band (Dave Baksh). They had a pretty heavy album in Chuck (2004), then Dave left in 2006 and Sum 41 made the "softer", more pop-rock/punkier Underclass hero (2007) while claiming that the "metal phase is over". Many thought that Sum 41 would follow the same softer trend Linkin Park and many other punk and rock bands were, and they had every reason for doing it too. Instead they did the opposite. First they started covering Metallica more during their live shows like this one and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and then a couple years later went on to create Screaming Bloody Murder (2011) which easily rivals Chuck as the heaviest album they have ever released, still without their metal loving ex-guitarist Dave. In 2013 their original drummer left the band and in 2014 their frontman and vocalist Deryck Whibley's kidneys collapsed from long-time heavy alcohol abuse and many thought the band was over. While this was happening, Dave had listened to Screaming Bloody Murder on his own (2011), and realized that he "should not have left this band" and contacted the band for the first time in many years behind the scenes. In 2015, Sum 41 played some shows with a new drummer and during one of them, Dave made a guest appearance. Later that year they announced that Dave was permanently back in the band, WITHOUT kicking his original replacement, meaning they now have 3 guitarists. 2 albums later and they have maintained their "rock with metal influences"-sound, which makes them stand out in my opinion.
  • whoah... i was not ready for this kind of quality cover.... this is fucking awesome to be honest

See? I knew it, Mustaine wrote all of Blink 41 riffs

Blink 183 is such a good grindcore band. Great slipknot cover.
  • In my opinion Sum 41 is the perfect blend of punk, Thrash and heavy metal that this world needs.

Punk drummers are some of the best drummers in the game period.
  • This is what happens when musicians care about doing justice to a song they cover . Well done

It seems I was the only one that came here thinking: "Hell yeah, this will be amazing". And was not disappointed.
  • I only watched this video to see these punks fail.. unfortunately the joke was on me, amazing!
  • .....did sum 41 seriously do a good cover of a thrash metal masterpiece? jesus fuck
  • @monkeyliver1986
I'm not into sum 41 but I gotta admit this cover is really good
  • That drummer was on point for that whole entire song. I never would’ve thought Sum41 could play a Metallica song like that with such precision. Genuinely impressed. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. They killed it
