Something interesting about color is that in gen 2, due to Game Boy Color's low space, sprites were limited to 4 tones: Black, White, and two different colors. Because of this restriction, Pokemons Pokemons had to be designed with very few colors in mind. They typically avoided purely white parts because they mainly used white to give volume to their sprites through specular and stuff, instead of black through shadows. But using black parts was fine since they could give volume through one of the two colored tones. So when designing a Fakemon to be like Gen 1 and 2 designs, this is a very important point to consider. There can only be 3 colors on the whole design, and if there's 3, one of them has to be black. If there's more, one of these colors need to be replaceable by black or by white (e.g. Togepi's blue egg patterns were actually black in-game), or be half-tones between two of the 4 tones (e.g. Cyndaquil's yellow on its body is different than its flame's yellow, which was faked by giving white speculars on the body, yet nothing but orange outlines for its flame. In their sprite, they give the illusion of a different yellow, but the tone is the same) This is part of the reason why Pokemons starting from gen 3 feel dramatically different, they had a lot more freedom with their colors. They still only have one or two main colors, but they were able to add more accent colors and didn't have to rely on black and white.
  • I started drawing Fakemon around a year and a half ago. The designs, shapes, colors and even the concepts were... rough, to say the least. Overtime, i learned from other artists and Poketubers on how to draw better, and just drew more and eventually got better. Now, i can say with certainty that i'm at least decent with my designs. But honestly, this video showed me that i've got a lot more to learn and do before i can ever call myself a good, or even great artist. Remember kids: Be modest and willing to learn, especially from more experienced people. This new knowledge is gonna do me wonders for my Macedonia region, so thanks Froopy!

This was awesome. I've never heard of "shape language" but it makes so much sense. Definitely going to be applying some of this to my next designs. Cheers
  • A Frankenstein Platypus Fakemon? puts a fedora on the platypus PERRY THE FRANKENSTEIN PLATYPUS FAKEMON?!
  • @Rachnid
First!Btw this is really helpful for me bc I am working on an ancient egypt region.
  • I would like to ask your help: how can you experience with colours on paper? I usually have the character, even the colours as well, but I can't deside where I would like to use which one
  • I’m gonna watch this video the next time I make a Fakémon
  • @da_monke_guy
Wow, thanks. Hopefully my Galapagos region goes well.

The shape doesn’t need meaning. It’s not a character, it’s a creature. POKÉMON designs have been getting more complicated designs.
