Katla volcano send us a huge flood today which for a while looked like preparations for an eruption but things are coming down again after evacuation plans were activated and aviation code over the glacier capped volcano was changed to code yellow. The sudden drop of veight above Katla's calder is however still posing at threat so the area remains on high alert.

Update July 28th at 14:00 GMT. The bridge over the river Skálm survived the floods and the road will open up again before 7:00 PM today.

"This bridge is the main trouble maker today" I love Islandic stoicism. Good luck.

The more I see of the stunning geography of Iceland, the more I wish I could go there in person. One of life's regrets that I never did, and now I can't. Thanks for bringing it into my living room, Gylfi.

Oh dear, am arriving in Iceland in just over 2 weeks. Can you please tell Katla to behave just a bit longer?! 😁
  • @rally618
Always love how you pronounce Iceland !! What a incredible island, very scenic. Hope your people never let it get trashy and look like some parts of the world.

Love the Icelandic attitude to volcano-related damage. '*sigh*, okay, we fix it and carry on.' I think we could all learn from their stoic resilience and general competence around 'volcano on my infrastructure' situations. Thanks for the update and the beautiful videography as ever. Hopefully this isn't Katla's week for getting jealous that Reykjanes is getting all the attention and trying to compete.

Beautiful photography Gylfi and thanks for the update. I hope that Katla remains calm for the sake of the people of Iceland and its visitors. Safe travels for you.

Wow, this is happening right in the area I was in around 2018. All those locations are so familiar, hope they survive. Such an amazingly beautiful countryside, formed from the chaos and violence of eruptions, meltwater, floods and time. We forget that this is what made the landscape of Iceland so incredible but it's unfortunate and disruptive when it happens in our short human timeframe. Thank you for posting these, wishing you all the best in the coming months.

Lol smaller units with longer names. Your country does road repair like no other country. I hope it's not an eruption. Wishing you well

always a pleasure to listen to your calm voice as you describe the beginning/ending of the world lolol thank you!!

Thanks so much again for an informative update. That is one MESS of water coming down the river, and of course with any significant eruption it will be orders of magnitude worse. Take care, stay safe, and know that you have countless friends around the world wishing for your best health continuing forward!

Never a dull moment in Iceland - keeps you all on your toes!
  • Looking at the wild road you were on, I am hoping your car is healthier than it was. And I’ll add my hope to all the others that Katla does keep sleeping.

Hello from the UK, have been following Iceland's journey.... thank you for the footage

Thank you for this information! Tourist here! We were actually at Solheimajökull Glacier about to do a guided hike that day. Our tour guide went over all the safety information, gave us ice picks, harnesses, helmets, and crampons and told us a brief history of Katla. After we walked about .75 miles towards the glacier, our tour guide said the police were evacuating us due to glacier floods and potential volcanic activity. Very scary moment since we had such little information at the time and had a long way to go back to get to our car. My thoughts were racing at this time, but luckily we were able to get out of there and avoid flooded roads. 😅 My family all joked that the guided tour was a tourist trap to get our money quick and not have to actually take us on the glacier, but I know that wasn't the case because they refunded us 😂

I was in Iceland this May and drove the whole ring road - we heard about the potential of Katla and the chance of flooding just like this! Hoping everyone stays safe!
