Big beat pioneer The Crystal Method returns to The Lab LA this week. Formerly a duo, today's Crystal Method is represented by founding member Scott Kirkland, who brings with him over two decades of innovation and electrifying sound and performance. September marked the newest development for The Crystal Method's now solo continuation with the release of 'A Trip Home' out on Tiny E Records, the sixth full-length album release and first solo effort from Scott Kirkland under The Crystal Method name. It's equal parts throwback and boundary-pushing moments of the future. In support of the album release, The Crystal Method is currently embarking on 'The Trip Home' tour across North America, including a stop at KCRW's Viaduct Sunset series on October 19. For everyone bashing Scott's "technique," anyone that mixes live makes mistakes. Some more than others. Making zero mistakes is either a sign that 1) No actual mixing is happening or 2) The DJ isn't doing much interesting other than playing tracks in sequence. He's not relying on Ableton Live and a Macbook to do the heavy lifting. This is the "old-school" way. Still sounds pretty freakin' great to me.

I love that hes actually mixing unlike 90% of the dj's now days.

Crystal Method breaks down music layer by layer, he peels it like an onion until only parts are left, then he takes those parts dismantles them down to their molecular level, until what you are hearing can barely be considered music by your ears. Just noise. Then he takes you on a trip where he takes those basic pieces of sound and puts them back together bit by bit until you are hearing the most beautiful melody. That is how I describe it to someone that has never heard Crystal.

I definitely prefer this set over any set in which a "DJ - Performer" throws cake at the audience. Really mind blowing set man. Kudos!

This is the true definition of passion - doesn't play it safe, I never know what to expect in his sets. One of the only DJ's I can actually watch an entire set without skipping through - the man!!

Saw them, when they were still touring together, in DC and it was the most epic show I've ever been to. Met the guys, took pics, even let my wife and I in the DJ booth. Pinnacle DJ's.
