Earthbound has a very similar antipiracy method. The game spawns neverending clusters of enemies to attack you and make the game very annoying to play through, and during the final boss fight, as soon as the villain's true form is revealed, the game freezes and deletes all your save data.

You know what would be cool for Mario Kart anti-piracy? If even when you got ahead of all the other racers, it still said you were in 2nd place, basically as a way of saying “pirates don’t get to be in 1st place.” I also thought the Mario Galaxy one was really cool, although they totally missed an opportunity to make a joke about space pirates.
