Overnighter in Dulyn Bothy Mountain Refuge Shelter. North Wales in Winter. Hiking in the Snow.

Published 2023-02-08
In this video, I am up in the mountains of North Wales having just spent the night in my broken tent during a snow storm. I head down to a lower altitude to meet with a friend at Dulyn Bothy - a mountain refuge hut where we spend the night sheltered from the biting cold and snow and enjoy a warm fire, a few drinks and great company.

The Bothy at Dulyn reservoir is one of many owned and maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association. They are free to use and accommodate several people, offering shelter from the weather in remote mountainous regions. They are basic, but usually have bunks of some description, simple furniture, a place to prepare food and some have a fire place to warm up. You can join the Mountain Bothies Association for an annual fee that helps fund the maintenance of these fantastic resources.

I hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks for watching.

  • Hi folks, thanks for watching! it seems the scammers are back at it again! If you’ve received a reply to your comment ‘apparently’ from me asking you to get in touch, it is NOT me, please ignore and report to YouTube. They are trying to imitate me in order to get information and scam you out of money. I will never do giveaways or anything like that through the comments section. I hope nobody has been caught out. My dad's second favourite bothy after Cae Amos. When he passed away in 2021, part of his legacy was to make Dulyn watertight by replacing the leaky single-pane windows… I helped fit the newest windows in September just gone. Glad to see they have stood up to a Welsh winter!

A bothy is a monument to humanity at its finest. It is literally a shack in the middle of nowhere, which is maintained solely for the purpose of helping out random strangers who you will most likely never meet.
  • Thank you Simon. You take someone like me with mobility problems to places I could never dream of getting to and in a very entertaining way. Much appreciated.
  • A Scottish bothy saved my life. Got trapped in a blizzard and managed to navigate to the bothy. 2 days and nights before the blizzard cleared.
  • When you get a notification that Simon has uploaded a video, you grab your device, kick back and enjoy.....and he even preforms his own stunts 😉😉😉
  • A toast to everyone who has ever built a public use shelter for weary and wary travelers.

Simon, you brought both a smile & a tear to me, a very old woman in a very bad nursing home in 🇨🇦. My dear husband died a cruel death here recently from Parkinson's & dementia. Before he died he said ''This place has broken my spirit". I will take to my grave my guilt that I didn't find a way or the money to move him to a better place. I watch YouTube to escape the unending sadness & dysfunction here & for some reason your video popped up in my feed. I'm leaving a comment because I noticed your address is Diss. My paternal grandparents were from there & emigrated to Canada (Toronto via Montreal where their boat docked) in the late 1800s. I have my father's Diss birth certificate, exquisite penmanship on a beautiful, lage document, pale green, dated 1900 [for reasons unknown, my grandmother returned to Diss alone, gave birth to my father, then sailed back here]. They owned a small farm in Diss and were staunch members of the Salvation Army. They had a very eccentric, reclusive relative, a man who lived alone there in an ancient house stuffed full of antique furniture. Names: Arthur Orford Flatman & Alice Philpot; children: Ivan, Madge, Earnest, Lily, & twins who died in infancy; the relative if I recall correctly was Thomas Flatman. Thanks for the video which for a while reminded me how precious fresh air, silence, & privacy are. I wish you well. 🙋

Awesome Simon, in a world of turmoil, 3 blokes sat round a fire in the middle of nowhere, take care, brilliant mate

Offering Bothys to travelers for free is a very generous and hospitable thing to do….actually touching to think about. So many places in the world are tourist destinations and you pay through the nose to stay in even a simple motel or whatever.
  • It’s amazing the effect a small fire has on morale even if it raises the temperature a hand full of degrees and drys wet kit. 🔥🔥👍

It’s difficult enough to do these walks in those conditions but when you take into account all the camera positioning and editing involved alongside the challenges faced then you have to admire the efforts Simon makes. I appreciate your dedication mate.

Very nice wrap up of this three day blizzard adventure. These conditions are actually more dangerous than one might think. Wet snow and high winds will get you cold and wet very fast, much more than in conditions below zero. Also when the visibility gets low it's really easy to get disoriented and the wind and snow than pounds the face is very distracting. Good to use the compass and map and to take out directions. Difficult skill to master in those conditions with low visibility where it's hard to recognize landmarks to adjust bearing to. A compass & map basics would be a good upcoming video for you to make.

Great wee bothy. Up here in Scotland they are essential. Great to see the demonstration of the necessity of these provisions becoming available throughout the rUK. 👍.
  • @garyking9908
The networks should hire you to teach them how to film documentaries! Thanks for sharing your adventures
  • Great to see your stay at the bothy. I've stayed there a lot with friends and always carried in enough coal to get the place toasty warm. Also cooked bacon over candles there when the gas ran out the following morning. Also I belive I saw the helicopter when I was travelling through ogwen valley on the bus because it was hovering around tryfan. Great having a place to warm up and have logs and beers carried in.
  • @lrdisco2005
That's the sort of terrain that makes it worth the effort, breathtaking.
  • @markclifton14
This is what I like about the out door community. You can meet people and make some good friends. And you find that most people look after one another.
  • Thank you. From Central Kentucky. Nothing like from you local! God Bless and stay safe.

Stayin with a Canuck. My Mother was Canadian, my American Dad captured her while stationed in Canada and brought her here to Pennsylvania USA in 1962. She loved the outdoors and felt that Pennsylvania was closest to looking like Saulte Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada except she said our water was dirty. My mother loved the outdoors and the Queen of England. She never gave up her Canadian citizenship, she passed away in 2015 with it still intact. I wish we had these kind of remote places that were equipped like this place you went to, I am not sure, but I don't think we have that. Everything has to be Corporatized here in the United States of Corporations. Thank you, for making the video I enjoyed it very much. You ROCK. Linda in USA
