Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival - Bought 9 bikes! Will they Run? + Camp Life

Published 2023-10-11
We traveled to Leeds, Alabama for the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival and ended up bringing home 9 bikes. We enjoyed camping, watching the racing, demo rides, swap meeting, hanging out with friends and riding the motorcycle all weekend!

  • That dude helped lift the second bike into your pickup. A True Biker.
  • Thoroughly enjoyed this video and it's a perfect example of how bikers interact, they're all willing to lend a hand or offer up advice to help eachother out.

I bought a moped when I was a 14 year old teenager, 25 dollars, from a friend of mine. It looked new, but no one was trying to get it running because the instructions were in Korean, and all the bolts were metric. This was 1978. I had to figure it out and fix it. Basically replaced plug, changed out sparkplug wire, cleaned up the fuel line. It was fun, had a 2 cycle engine. I drove it all over the place, would show up at family houses and they were surprised to see me riding a moped. They all gave me the "how dangerous a motor bike is" speech, my mother especially, thinking it was like a normal motorcycle, but it only did like 30-35 mph downhill. I would have kept it, but the guy who sold it to me wanted to buy it back since I got it running better. I charged him $35. Well, he pulled a fast one on me, he sold right off to another dude for double what I sold it for. I didn't care, got my money back. Coolest thing about it, the spark plug, wire, and entire expenditdure for gas was under 8 bucks total. Plugs were about a dollar back then, the plug wire was about 2 bucks, 2 cycle oil was about 2 bucks. Gas was 79 cents a gallon. it held a gallon. IT got close to 120 mpg, since it was pedal assist. I replaced some bolts because dude was using vice grips instead of getting some metrics to fit the bolts correctly. I couldn't tell you the brand name on the moped, it was pretty obscure. Like something you would buy in FingerHut catalog or Montgomery Wards way back then. I really want a Vespa. Would be very economical to have it now. Good Luck with all the bikes!

  • In 1979 while on sales call for auto test equipment, I spotted an identical green Honda Express in a box at a auto repair shop. The forks were bent as was the frame tube. It had been backed over while parked at curb. I bought it for $35, straightened the forks on a press and notched the frame, rewelded and straightened it. My wife rode it 10K over the years.

It’s a Peugeot “poo-joe”. There isn’t a R in the name. That company makes cars in Europe. Looks like y’all had a great time there. Keep up the great work!!!!!
