Join us as we visit Caernarfon Castle In Gwynedd North Wales. One of King Edward I's stunning Medieval Fortresses that was built in this region of the country.
Built over a duration of 57 years between 1283 and 1330, and costing in the region of £25,000, this stunning castle is probably the most well known in North Wales due to its signafigence in British History.
The now King Charles III was the crowned Prince of Wales when he was 20 years old at the investiture ceremony at Caernarfon Castle. The title of Prince of Wales has now been passed on to Prince William, although it is believed that a ceremony similar to that which was held for his father in 1969 is highly unlikely.

Today though, this does not mean that this amazing piece of history is not worth a visit. With day tickets for a family costing in the region of £30. Tickets can be purchased on the following link - cadw.gov.wales/visit/places-to-visit/caernarfon-ca….
We had previously visited Beaumaris Castle which is on the island of Anglesey and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the ruins, but Caernarfon castle is a very different experience. It is extremely well maintained and has an abundance of historic facts and displays spread throughout.
Firstly though when you visit, you may well find yourself being surprised by it's actual size and design. With a unique hourglass shaped design and it's brazen 12 towers, it is a structure that dominates the landscape and really does appear to stand guard over the beautiful town of Caernarfon.
It has 12 towers which can all be climbed (we say climbed as the narrow steps, do make it feel like quite a hike). The most notable of which are Black Tower, Chamberlain Tower, The Queen's Tower and the tallest, which is Eagle Tower. With its three great turrets and 18-feet thick walls, it is the dominant structure of the castle.
If you are not feeling that energetic, we recommend that you at least go to the top of the Eagle Tower as the views are spectacular. Especially on a sunny day, such as when we visited. You can see across Menai Straits to Anglesey and get a birds eye view of the town itself.

The castle has a small café near the entrance and it also has some great displays which details the history of not just the castle but of King Edward I, giving you a great insight as to the turbulent and often quite violent history that has taken place on the grounds of not just the castle but the surrounding areas.
Also located in the castle is the Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers - The Museum is housed in two towers of Caernarfon Castle. In it you will find a wealth of original exhibits, supported by film, sound and models, which tell the story of over 300 years of service by Wales' oldest infantry regiment, in peacetime and in war, all around the world. With models, medals and a vast array of historic weapons, you will find enough to entertain all ages.
In addition to the museum, there is also a cinematic display in the North Tower (situated at the far side of the castle from the entrance), which gives you a great insight into the castles history. From William The Conquerors wooden fortress that was initially situated at the site, right through to modern day.
At present, 2022, there is a £4.5 million improvement taking place near the King's Gate, during which an elevator is being introduced. This will allow everyone to experience the castle and the amazing views from the towers. Being wheelchair friendly this will obviously enhance the appeal of the sightseeing attraction. Which even today attracts in excess of 200,000 tourists.
We hope you enjoy our tour of the Stunning Caernarfon Castle and we certainly recommend it as a great place to see and day our of your are in this part of the country.
