The Dead Marshes, one almost wonders what ghosts Tolkien had awakened during his life. Ghosts that had to be excised during his writhing of these stories we hold dear. There really are ghosts in this world, they live on in our hearts and memories, waiting for that opportunity to make themselves known in such unexpected ways.

I would hope that with the total destruction of the one ring of sauron that any lingering dark magic and it's corruption on the mass grave would be broken and all these souls would be free to rest in peace

Don't forget that Morgoth corrupted the very earth itself forever by making Morgoths ring. So maybe that had some influence in the making of the dead marshes. Ever since then Arda was diminishing. Sauron was his student trying to emulate his masters control over the seen and unseen realms. He was a meyar and the spiritual force of such a cataclysm bound the souls to Arda rather than going to the halls of the dead. A kinds purgatory on earth.
