AEG Lavamat washing machine strip down - Sealed drum can't fix :-(

Something different - we try and fix an EAG washing machine - with no success. The new sealed bearing design makes these machines unfixable but in the end it was a corroded inner drum support failure.

  • Same as above. Saved me the effort of a strip down. Appreciate the time you guys put in.

Great vid. To see you two finding your way through it is so helpful and entertaining and it will hopefully ensure you make any mistakes before I do. I paused it at the point you were about to extract the drum and I'll return in a bit to see how it all goes back together. Thanks fellas. I reckon you saved me from some dramas... I'll let you know soon enough lol

I just love this video and the comments, and the link in one of the replies to a Russian video which shows the exact same approach but a handsaw rather then an angle grinder so it can be siliconed back together. My only advice is to stick the screws in a piece of card and label them, so you don't have to re-watch your video to find out which screws go where. Keep it up guys - your attitude and determination is impeccable !

This is the kind of stripdown i like. Exactly the little problems and hassles i always run into.

Thanks fellas just saved me a load of time, ours has exactly same fault, so new machine ordered!

I recently had also a bearing failure in an AEG top loader. For some reason they use replaceable bearings on those. The root cause was an axle gasket failing which allowed water through the bearing rinsing all the greases off of the bearing and subsequent rust build-up. The machine is 3 years old. AEG provided new bearings as a goodwill but I needed to pay for the change.
  • There is a way to split the plastic drum and silicone it back togeather. Drill some holes for screws (& nuts) in the ear sections which are thicker on the same area all around where it has been plastic welded. With a precision saw cut the drum open from where it is platic welded making sure you are cutting it flat and clean as have to put it back togeather. Replace the Y frame or bearing which ever seems to be the problem. Then apply silicone sealant on the face that you have sawed off, join the plastic drum and screw it togeather with suitable screws and nut in the location where holes were drilled. Let it dry over night and check it for any leaks the next day before putting it back in to the machine. Seen it done in other brands of machine where the drum is plastic welded.

Thanks! I was about to embark on a mission to replace the bearings on my AEG with all the noise it’s making (sounds like an F16 about to take off!) but it looks like a new machine is in order 😖 so wasteful! But thanks for saving me the time!
  • Always easier to take bits off then put back.Replacing that seal looked a nightmare.I ve got the same machine and it saved me a long time and frustration taking it all apart. As you say it was destined for the dump after the first five mins so had a bit of fun ripping it all apart .Least I know now why mines knocking and shaking on a spin .

Thanks a lot! I didn't understand much of what you said, but everthing you did. Greetings from Berlin!

Just saved us a day of working on ours, thanks!
  • Well not sure what you guys done wrong but I have same machine leaked water out through bearing I removed drum undone all the screws and replaced bearings and reassembled job done working fine e after replacing bearings I drum and the motors bearings. All in all a very fine washing machine fixable easily done.

Apart from the soap drawer and front control panel that AEG machine is exactly the same as our Zanussi machine that l have just dismantled for drum bearing failure. The drum is definitely sealed, the central circumferential joint flange is welded. Although the flange could be split by carefully sawing round it l would seriously question if it could be resealed adequately. This means the drum front bearing, the one that fails, cannot be accessed for replacement. Interestingly our machine lasted for 15 years before bearing failure, so not too bad. A complete replacement drum with new bearings etc is about £225 so not really worth it given the cost of new machines. Our machine went to the tip.

I asked the company service via email whether a replacement bearing is available, and they answered very quick that the whole drum must be exchanged. On some internet stores the drum is cheaper that at the AEG site. In my case 150 Euros instead of 250.
  • I had the bearings go on one of these and yes, the whole drum had to be replaced. Fortunately they'd thrown in a 5 year extended warranty when i bought it!
  • @pieranja
Great job guys. I can relate to your statement: we don't like it if we can't fix it, so we destroy it. I think I have the same issue. The drum is loose. According to your video it seems my year started out nice. NOT
  • @tomclulee4339
Exactly the same problem on our 5 year old lavamat what an absolute joke. AEG designers you need to have a long hard look in the mirror, this is mid 20th century mentality. I'm buying Beko from now on, at least you know what you are getting not some overpriced piece of kitchen fluff! Thanks though guys, saved me taking the same journey on a Sunday, off to the beach with the kids instead 👍👍

Replacing the DRUM of a washing machine: “right turns out it’s a total strip down.” 😂😂😂
