Capturing a time lapse of the 2023 Geminid Meteor shower, Australia

Published 2023-12-17
Capturing the Geminid Meteor showers was a once-in-a-year opportunity. Based in Perth, Western Australia, I drove 1 hour north to the Lancelin sand dunes. I chose this location to minimise light pollution and to have a somewhat interesting foreground. It definitely wasn't a shower, but a few managed to light the sky.
The cover image is my best shot of the time-lapse.
I used the Photopills app to plan the shoot using my Sony a9 with Sony 20mm f/1.8 shooting wide open at 1.8. My exposures were approximately 13 seconds long for the 2-hour time lapse in the early hours of 15.12.2023.
The random lights you see in the foreground is just me playing around to test the lighting effects.
Although the Photopills app stated about 80 meteors/hr at the peak period, I conclude that many of the Geminid Meteors were probably not visible to the eye. Also, being located in the southern hemisphere meant less meteor activity than the northern hemisphere.

Beautiful video, somehow amazing. I love the meteor coming there (00:00:16) and back at 00:00:33 😀Forgive me that joke 🙂 Really nice place and vid 🤙🏻Greetings from Czech repub
  • Nice video but it needs to be slowed down just a tad more. Most of the meteors are too quick to even spot. Maybe try to stretch it to a minute and a half or so? Just my opinion!
