My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.

What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS

You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here:    • Draw My Life

Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).

What do you film with? - I currently film almost exclusively with my Samsung Galaxy S8: amzn.to/2lPKSpZ

How do you get those shots where you're walking or running? - A Joby Gorillapod for smartphones, like this: amzn.to/2sXNIL3

You drop your phone a lot, how does it survive? - THIS CASE IS AMAZING: amzn.to/2hoxgTA (Galaxy S7) - amzn.to/2Dt08Bu (Galaxy S8) - amzn.to/2FxVliP (iPhone)

What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.

Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.

Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:    • Why I Want to Live in France

But what are you doing there? - Living it up!    • What Am I Doing in Paris?

Do you speak French? Oui.    • Un Jour en Francais (English Subtitles)

You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here:    • The Pitch (Sorta) - Agnar's Box and C...

Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.

I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: patreon.com/jayswanson

I don't trust this Patreon thing - what's your PayPal? - Here's a handy link! www.paypal.me/jayswanson

I like PayPal in pink! - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson

But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

And here's the French one: bit.ly/JaysFrenchWishList

Can I come stay with you in Paris? - Have you seen my apartment? It's too small for me as it is!    • The Apartment Tour (Long Version)

OK, but how do I use the Metro when I'm there? - I made a handy video for you:    • How To Use the Paris Metro - French F...

  • Your dad waving through the sun roof at the end, haha. Hope you feel better for your epic travel day and it's great that you're enjoying going back to Spokane more now for a wee visit too :D
  • “the more fragmented your heart becomes.” i never thought about it like that before but it is so true. the sheer amount of love i have to give is divided and scattered all around the world. what a lovely image, thanks for that one :-) hope you get back safe!!

Spokane looks so pretty in these shots. Love the deer at the beginning 😊
  • I totally understand the feeling and fear of being trapped. When I owned my home in a Houston suburb, I felt trapped. The house felt like a huge rock around my neck. Maybe it was not the house itself, but the horrid Houston suburb. Now I feel more free, and I feel I can go anywhere. More than anything, I do not want to feel trapped again. When I think about feeling trapped, I can’t breathe.

J'adore votre chaîne! C’est tellement amusant de regarder un discours américain sur sa vie à Paris! Continue ainsi et bonne chance!
  • Loved hearing your take on the expat benefits. That is exactly why I'm 'kaleidoscopeallie' As it says on my Instagram 'Twist the view finder again and again and watch all the labels collapse into tumbling truths, new wholes, new possibilities.' It's all us. . . all those pieces and yet so often we get stuck in the comfort of one particular pattern and lose sight of the potential we possess. Being an expat has taught me to embrace the shifting patterns and learn to explore all of who and what I can be.

I don't know much about migraines Jay except I've heard certain foods like chocolate can bring on one. When last did you check your blood pressure - yes I want to know. My housekeeper lost the sight (temporarily) in one eye due to a mild stroke brought on by high blood pressure. Younger and younger people are being affected by strokes - not just us old fuddy duddies.

meeting new people from different parts of world and learning about their culture is the reason which motivates me to move abroad. Also happy journey and be safe. Seeing the news Paris doesn't seem to be in nice shape right now.
  • My brain seems to function best when occupied with metaphor, imagery and similitude...and your fractured heart comment can only bring to mind a beautiful stained glass image a la the great cathedrals, or a burning man installation. Thousands of individual, connected pieces making up an anatomical heart enveloped by an ever growing metaphoric one. I wish you could see it, but of course, you are living it. Ever changing with the quality of light, ever changing as it grows. I'm sad I couldn't shift my schedule to catch you and Nolan, but I'm so happy to see that Spokane is no longer such a difficult place for you to visit. <3

Hey Jay and beautiful Spokane! I hope you’re feeling better today , members of my family suffer with migraines and they can be the worst. You’re very fortunate to have friendships throughout the world, I could imagine living abroad could be very lonely for an introverted person and we know that’s not ever going to be your issue 😉. Safe journeys back home and stay clear of the yellow jackets 😲.
  • That is an interesting perspective about home sickness while living abroad. I do agree with it though. Great vlog as always Jay 👍
  • @rc9272
Reaching Pizza Pipeline is now a goal in my life...feel better Jay! Also, I'm jealous I can't grow a beard
  • @geoffhoulton
Interesting that you enjoyed this trip home more than before - sounds like you've moved on emotionally. I felt this way too when I first moved away from my home city...took a little while to realise that the move was permanent and that trips home where enjoyable but definitely temporary!
  • @tchem1571
Safe travels and protect those eyes after suffering from a migraine 😉
  • @MartinOcando
I've been an expat for almost 8 years, and I still miss home way too much. I feel very lonely, as I've been unable to make many friends here. Panama is not a foreigner friendly place, unfortunately. At least for us Venezuelans. Anyway. That's what we have to deal with on a daily basis. Enough rant. Hey, watch out for the riots when you get home. Things are getting pretty ugly. At least is what the news say.
