This Concerto for Oboe in F major, performed by Emma Black and the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is a reconstruction of an oboe concerto, based on the keyboard concerto in E major, BWV 1053. Oboists did fairly well out of Bach, as his oeuvre contains more than two hundred oboe solos. They often concern one or two oboes in opening choruses and arias in the cantatas. But the true solo repertoire is sparse. For example, no solo concertos for oboe have survived. There are indications that Bach did indeed compose oboe concertos, whose manuscripts and parts have been lost over the years. For a complete oboe concerto, however, we have to rely on reconstructions, such as this Oboe Concerto in F major BWV 1053r.

Recorded for the project All of Bach on December 6th 2019 at Stadsgehoorzaal, Leiden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

Having practiced some classical trumpet, I have no idea how anyone can coax such a tender lovely sound out of a double reed historical oboe. Emma is truly an artist of the highest order.

One day, when concerts are played in front of an audience and people are allowed to travel again, I have to see the NBS at least once live, they are such a great inspiration for my own musicianship, every single piece they play is a joy for my ears!!
  • This made me cry. I've come back to Bach and Baroque music after decades away, and I continue to be devastated (both emotionally and sonically) by his music. Such a beautiful performance.

Sublime music. If mankind never produced anything else of worth or beauty, the music of Bach alone would be sufficient justification for our existence.
  • ... and don't forget to applaud the unseen audio folks who produced this truly exquisite recording. Headphones are highly recommended!

LOVE the sound of the historical Oboe. It's like a completely different instrument. I know they have their limitations, but what a sound! Just lovely.
  • 'Goosebumps' Music. I remember as a child hearing this and being almost hypnotised - still am 50 years later!
  • This music somehow manages to affect me in the most simple yet potent way. After listening to it this morning I couldn’t help but grin and whistle it to myself as I walked down the street. This piece didn’t crash over me in great waves of emotion like his passions did, but their respective roles are equally important. I am very grateful for this music that reminds me of all the beauty in those simple moments.
  • I love this concerto. It's so optimistic. Bach engages the emotions on a deeper level, so welcome after a year of isolation that we've all been experiencing globally. Thank you Bach. You live on forever through your music ♥️
  • The Oboe fits in magnificently with that orchestra. Love the sound

Encore un concert d'une très haute tenue. Le sens de l'écoute. Le phrasé. L'entente parfaite du groupe. Le plaisir manifeste de jouer ensemble. Et cette musique d'une richesse presque insondable. Un régal. Encore une référence. Woooaaa !👏

It has been more than 40 years since I heard this Siciliano for the first time. I was living in Belgium, and a light snow was falling. It was the perfect aural landscape. On hearing this magical sound, one is frozen in time, with no desire to return to the madness of daily life. I am so grateful for this splendid performance by Emma Black and the Netherlands Bach Society.

Wonderful performance- you guys never cease to outdo yourselves. Thank you for sharing it on YouTube.
  • It truly amazes me how a septet sounds so rich and nearly as full as an entire orchestra 😊❤

Absolutely delightful. I love Bach's music and these musicians, these artists perform it so beautifully.
  • Wunderbares Konzert. Berührende Interpretation. Diese Musik kennt keine Umwege und sucht niemals Schranken, sondern öffnet den Sinn für die Wahrnehmung des wirklich Wichtigen. Vielen Dank der Netherlands Bach Society.
