Rob Holmes is a private investigator. He works with major luxury-watch brands to track down fakes and stop them from getting to market.

Holmes speaks with Business Insider about how counterfeits are made in factories overseas. He gives details about how fake luxury goods are trafficked into the United States and distributed to consumers, tells us how the counterfeit industry has evolved with the rise of a new generation of "superfakes," and gives advice about how to spot a counterfeit. He also examines a genuine Rolex, and gives tips on how to spot a genuine watch.

Holmes began investigating counterfeits during his childhood: his father, Robert Sr., was a renowned counterfeit investigator in New York in the 1980s. Holmes describes his dad's encounters with Chinatown gangs and tells Business Insider how he and his brother are carrying on their father's legacy through their investigations business, MI:33.

As we were preparing to publish this video, a representative from Customs and Border Protection wrote in an email: "Trade in counterfeit and pirated goods threatens America's innovation economy, the competitiveness of our businesses, the livelihoods of U.S. workers, and, in some cases, national security and the health and safety of consumers. CBP targets and seizes imports of counterfeit and pirated goods, and enforces exclusion orders on patent-infringing and other IPR violative goods. CBP's interdiction efforts begin well before a conveyance or shipment arrives at a port. Advance electronic shipping information, actionable intelligence, and information sharing partnerships are critical components that enable us to quickly identify, target, and deter the entry of counterfeit and dangerous goods, including illicit drugs, in all operational environments. Advance information is a critical and effective component of CBP's targeting and interdiction efforts."

If sweat shops and child labor is a concern then real Nike and Apple should also fall in same category
  • @binkleyme
They're called "Super Clones" not "Epic Fakes" And the grey market isn't watches that fell off of a truck. It's mostly pre-owned watches sold by non-authorized dealers. Some even in brand new condition because someone bought directly from Rolex and went to sell it to a grey market dealer for a profit. What kind of "expert" is this?
  • @michaelk7007
I think the person in this interview is a counterfeit investigator. He seems to be struggling with basic terminology with watches alone.
  • @tonkaty
Where did Business Insider find this guy, 2 minutes in and I'm amazed at the amount of misinformation.
  • TIL that Louis Vuitton is a big watch brand, and that Super Clones are called Epic Fakes all within the first 90 seconds of the video. Where did you find this guy? Grey Market watches are refused to service? lol, like you can't just say "I bought that on a trip to ". A watch is a watch and they can be serviced by any decent watchmaker/jeweler. "You need a magnifying glass to tell if it's a clone" and then confidently announces a watch as genuine using his naked eye.

Dude is talking smack about China but is wearing a Dragon medallion…
  • @momocha84
I stopped when he mentioned Louise Vuitton, who buys a fake LV watch 😂
  • @TheRealCartman1
This is just embarrassing. He works for the watch brands so of course he's going to lie and misrepresent facts for them. The issue of forced or child labor is a China issue, has nothing to do with counterfeit watches, even Apple and Nike has the issue. Guy is citing a story from 30 years ago about swapping gold for gold plated then claims it's common today so only use authorized dealers - this is no different is Ford claimed only they can fix your car and anyone else will cause your wheels to fall off. The assessment if the watch is real is out of date, good counterfeits today are impossible to tell from real unless you remove the case back.
  • @cinilaknedalm
When a guy with a chest medallion tells you buying luxurious watches instead of fakes prevents human trafficking, you naturally believe him
  • You forgot to mention one important thing. If you want to buy a Rolex and have the money, it doesn't matter, they literally won't sell you one! So for the majority of people buying a fake is the only way to get one.
  • @supaflymicros
He forgot about the guys that open their over coats with all the fakes. 😂
  • The dad gave him one of the fake watches? Isnt that very hypocritical..?
  • @Dzokhar
I'm not even halfway through this and 90% of what I've heard is incorrect or misleading. If this is an average example of what law enforcement knows, it explains why so many reps get through customs.
  • I had a fake Rolex that lasted me over 20 yrs. Not bad for $20 U.S. when I was in the Philippines in the 80s. Why did it break? I was wearing it when I crashed a motorcycle.
  • Where did you find this guy? He doesn’t know basic terminology. Rolex if you are using him to find fakes, teach him basic terms and explain the “crown” is a coronet. Also folks take 98% of what he told you and forget about it
  • @Sasripper
'Just buy from an AD!' Hahahaha Ok! sure 80s nostalgia man!
  • I’ve been in to watchs for about three years and I already know more about fakes than this guy. He is so misinformed. That chain he’s wearing is ridiculous. It probably fake.
  • @alexs5394
This is just making me want a counterfeit. Literally such high quality that you can't distinguish them from the real deal? Then....why pay for the real deal?
  • @flylikechi6
Who the eff buy LV counterfeit watches. At least say AP or something like Omega..
