4-Player chess #7- High ELO game

Several high-rated players making good moves. Some of our moves were subpar, but there was a huge twist in the end!

Can't see the points. Can't see your clock. Can't see your rating.

4-player chess, the format where you can decide you lost, click resign, and then win.
  • @MrMonkey4fail
resigning should have a point penalty. It seems unfair that you can resign and win with a completely lost position
  • @andrewweirny
The rule should be that if you mate in your first move after a player resigns, you get the points without capturing. Strategic resignation can’t be what the framers had in mind.

The comeback boooooooys. I suck at chess like you have no idea, but I'm really enjoying this 4-players chess thing, keep it coming
  • This was a very low elo rating game*. New players begin at 1500 and most of the time slowly go up. 1500s most of the time are oblivious to checkmate tricks and leave their pieces hanging and often times make stupid moves like sacrificing their queens for bishops or bishops and rooks for pawns. 1600s are a bit of a fight if they know how to survive and attack which probably half of them do but usually they are pretty easy. 1500s sometimes know how to blunder their pieces for the other side to attack one player (2v1) so that player cannot attack both at once. 1700s know what they're doing and know how to checkmate but still blunder pieces every now and then. 1800s the players start getting good and know all the basic checkmate tricks and tactics. 1900s are pretty tough to beat. When you get to the 2000s to 2100s most of the time players either start building an impenetrable defence system immediately or start using checkmate tricks whilst developing pieces at the same time, forcing you to defend before you can start pushing your pawns. You have to have your pawn backed up by a minimum of 1 pieces no matter what, sometimes 2 or 3 when you get to this level for it to be promoted. Usually 1900s and lower you can sacrifice your 2nd queen and still win. When you hit the 2000s, it becomes a scarcity so you want to hold on to the 2nd queen to dear life. Also other players teaming up on you become very common to break through your defence system. Blundering pieces still happens but is rare. It's also not good to castle early in game unless you have multiple threats to deal with. It just makes checkmating you much easier. Try and avoid getting checked no matter what because most of the time at least another player will gang up on you and take a piece of few. Try and make sure your king is always defended by at least a rook, bishop and a knight if possible but also has space to move around in. Sometimes moving into the 2nd rank is the safest option as long as you've got a rook on the bottom rank and the space on top of your king is closed up and defended by at least 2 pieces, with a couple of pieces on the 2nd rank. make sure you have at the minimum 2 pawns on the same colour of your king beside it if you want to go to the 2nd rank. Whether or not you have a queen or few, never open up the space on top of your king. Be patient before trying to promote if there's multiple threats outside. If your king has absolutely no defence left.. Start attacking whoever even if you have to sacrifice your pieces to get your points up because you're going to be checkmated very soon whether or not you do. I've come 2nd instead of last so many times attacking even with multiple threats and nothing covering my king except a pawn and was not checkmated first a few times too even though I had the least defence. Try and sacrifice your pieces to a player that is vulnerable and has less points than you if you need to sacrifice your pieces for points. If you have a few seconds on the clock left just move a piece back and forth (on defended squares) until you have enough time to think as long as you aren't under attack. 2400s are extremely difficult to beat especially end game even if you're up a queen. It just might be me though because I'm currently 2100s. I did have a 2500 in the match one time and he got absolutely raided and even before getting raided I saw a couple of vulnerable pieces of his. NOTE: For some reason when you get close to 2000, you'll automatically enter games which are much more difficult and you'll go up and down, up and down even back to 1700s.. At least for me, it could of been bad luck or something else. Once I reached 2000s it isn't even a fight to go up ranks, I went up 100 in 2 days even though your elo goes up much slower per 1st and 2nd place. If there is only 1 other person left and you have more than 30 points (it may only be 20-25) you can just resign and still come first. Sometimes you'll see the blue "claim win" button instead of resign. Sometimes you'll just automatically win and the game stops.

I just had a thought. In each game, there is a massively powerful forking square. When a queen is placed on this square, a single player can simultaneously target the weak "f7" square of all three opponents. It would be interesting to attempt some attacking ideas revolving around exploiting this square. In the first game, the square is Blue's b9 square. Surely there are some strategies revolving around this idea.

If red checks green and you then take away green's only legal move, aren't you the one who gets the points even if your own piece doesn't attack the king? After red checked green at 26:39, I was waiting for you to suddenly checkmate that king with Ra8 (Re8 from your black side perspective) instead of going for the queen.
  • Great stuff, you do a great job voicing your train of thought and your strategy then becomes easy to follow. You're also kind of devious on the board in a way that's fun to watch. Your voice and rhythm are nice to listen to as well, I could see you gathering a nice following playing this game if you up the production value a little and start playing the YouTube game (i.e. SMASH DAT LYKE BUTTON PPL)
  • @Matt-kh6te
good games Nathan I enjoyed watching this variant
  • Great game. Less great setup as noted by comments. Excited for 4 player, think I'll get back into chess sometime soon
  • Some other people have mentioned stuff about the point system, but in general this was an awesome illustrative game. Obviously Red had the won position but considering you played much more aggressively and outwardly, I think it's fair that you won, but just as importantly, it was a dope way to win
  • @whong09
Let me just help green out a little. -Beats greeb by 1 point.
  • @ShawnDRuth
LOL red must have been so pissed. He initiated greens destruction and you ran in and stole the kill. He did all the work and you fired off the kill shot! LMAO
