Returning to the gorgeous duality of David Draimen’s voice we’ll be checking out some of the unique sounds of Disturbed’s “Down With The Sickness”. It’s like there’s part angel and demon going on here so join me in breaking down this marvellous singer who destroyed me with “Sound of Silence”.

You need to also remember that you're looking at a relatively new band in this video. You can hear that David's voice is much younger and less mature than the one you heard in "Sound of Silence". Sixteen years of touring does a lot to a lead singer's vocal cords... some good, some bad, depending on how they use them. In David's case, I think he sounds better today than he did 20 years ago. This tells me he hasn't abused his voice, as much as strengthened it.

The Sound of Silence and Down With the Sickness are almost each end of the Disturbed spectrum. There are so many fantastic songs I can't even decide which ones to recommend.

Would love to see a reaction to the longer uncensored version of the song at some point. Or "Prayer", that song is fantastic
  • He did an interview about this one and he said originally that growl wasn't in the song, he did it spur of the moment during a training session and after the shock of the rest of the band wore off they decided to do it like that from then on. Here's the interview if anyone is interested https://youtu.be/PQS2WWTEefY

Oh this is gonna be goooooood. Really looking forward to seeing Julia’s face on the first “ooo ah ah ah ah”! Edit: haha priceless.

This groove and David's vocal attitude is so good in this song. Infectious. So much missing from their newer stuff

The sort of staccato sound to his consonants in the chorus is kind of his trademark sound. It's prevalent in a lot of Disturbed's songs

I was lucky enough to catch Disturbed in a small venue in Nashville very early in their career and...David was an an absolute force on stage. Everything you highlight for his voice, is so much more impactful live because of stage presence. Honestly as a an amateur vocalist, David's work inspires the hell out of me.

If you want to hear an amazing example of David's range, I highly recommend Save Our Last Goodbye. On top of his amazing vocal work, the song has a huge emotional element to it, similar to Cory Taylor and Snuff.

Love your reaction! Luv from here in Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️

Yeah, having listened to Disturbed from back in the day and this being the band's sound I was familiar with, The Sound of Silence completely blew my mind and made me love them even more.

Ahhhh I've been hoping you would tackle this one. Definitely the most in-depth analysis of this song I've found!

Best description I've heard of David's voice: God: So David, do you want the voice of an angel or the voice of a demon? David: Yes

Seeing you fall in love with David all over again just shows your appreciation for music always taking each song as an individual experience, much respect. Thank you for this

David Draiman. The Devil's dolphin. Absolutely amazing voice, one of my favourite.

Shame that official MV has a certain part cut out of it. Also it's worth mentioning that between Down with the Sickness and Sound of Silence there is at least half of a decade gap in vocal improvement. Another thing worth mentioning is that David got some kind of vocal cords surgery in the mean time.
  • Glad you listened to this. David is one heck of a vocalist. My kids got me into them way back when. Been rocking since I drove my parents nuts in the 60's lol. This guy has got the goods! Keep rockin'.

Down With the Sickness is probably the most well-known Disturbed song, and the "oh-wah-ah-ah-ah" in it is certainly the most iconic of David's "noises", but there are other songs where he makes different noises, and does them more often. Asylum and This Moment come to mind immediately, followed by Stricken, The Game and Haunted. Other songs I would recommend would be Pain Redefined (more for the unusual progression and cadence on the verses than anything else) and Overburdened (for more of his "sweet" tone — I would agree that that's a good adjective for it).

Stricken is a Disturbed song you should check out. It's one of my personal favorites from them.
